Robert Rennick Obituary

Robert M. Rennick, 78, of Prestonsburg, an authority on Kentucky place names and post offices, died Thursday at Highlands Regional Medical Center in Prestonsburg.

Mr. Rennick wrote a number of books, including Kentucky Place Names and From Red Hot to Monkey's Eyebrow: Unusual Kentucky Place Names, as well as a series on post offices in various regions of the state.

Mr. Rennick was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and taught at a number of colleges and universities before moving to Kentucky in 1970, when he took a position at Prestonsburg Community College.

Mr. Rennick's wife, Elizabeth Rennick, said he had an avid interest in folklore, and in the 1960s and 1970s became interested in people's names, such as "strange combinations, like Rosie Bottom, and people who wanted to change their names, like Adolf Jones after the second world war."

Elizabeth Rennick said she initially suggested that her husband begin researching the origins of place names, and he took the idea and ran with it after they moved to Kentucky.

In addition to visiting libraries and studying old maps, he traveled the state, interviewing people about the origins of the names of the communities where they lived.

"The only way to study the place is to go to the site and see what's there and ask the people who live in that area about the history," he said in a 1997 Herald-Leader interview.

Mr. Rennick was employed by the state Division of Licensing and Regulations from 1972 until his retirement in 1997. He had recently served as a consultant in cooperation with Morehead State University on a project to add names to the federal Geographical Names Information System database.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Rennick is survived by a sister, Marjorie Rennick Cohen, of Madison, Conn.

He was buried Sunday in Gethsemane Gardens in Prestonsburg.

Brilliant memory. Gifted researcher. Excellent in finding details and verify information as factual. A soft-spoken gentleman. I was honored to work with Bob.

I was so sad to learn tonight of Mr.
Rennick's passing. I was one of his
students at Berea College in the
late 1950's. He was a wonderful teacher,
who did much to inspire me to go on
to graduate school. I also served
as his assistant and found working for
him just as pleasurable as learning
from him in the classroom. One of the
highlights of our year was receiving
a Christmas card and note from Mr. and
Mrs. Rennick. I will miss him terribly
as will my wife (Martha Woody Kiser),
who was also one of his students. She
was a home economics major, and for one
of the classes, each student would
invite a favorite teacher to a dinner
prepared by the students. My wife
invited Mr. Rennick, and she has often
recalled that pleasant experience.
Our deepest sympathy and best wishes
to Mrs. Rennick.

I was saddened to hear of Bob's passing. Bob and I met through our work on geographic names. When it came to the names in Kentucky he had a twinkle in his eye and always willing to share his knowledge. He will be greatly missed.

It wasn't until after his death that I learned from Mrs. Rennick what a passionate man Mr. Rennick was. I've had the pleasure of spending time with her the last couple of days and listening to her stories of him. My condolences to her.

His work on getting into print the names and history of so many places will help future generations know of KY's unique and sometimes odd folklore and history. My sympathy to his wife and sister at his death.
