HYDEN - Dr. Steven M. Meader was born in Weirton, WV, on December 21, 1926. He was the son of the late Stephen and Anna Copelean Meader. He departed this life on Saturday, December 15, 2012, in London, KY. He was 85 years of age. Dr. Meader was a World War II Veteran, having served honorably in the United States Navy. He entered the Navy at the age of 17 in 1943. He served as a sonar operator on a submarine, and represented his sub and ship as a boxer against other armed forces. Dr. Meader attended college on the G.I. bill and was graduated as a member of the first class of the College of Stubenville, WV, in 1949. He worked his way through dental school at the University of Pittsburgh by working with his father on the weekends at the Weirton Steel Mill in the Bessemer furnace room and by playing alto sax (not very well) at weddings. Dr. Meader was graduated from dental school in 1953 and served in public health in both Virginia and Kentucky as a public health officer until he moved to Hyden in 1954. Dr. Meader practiced dentistry in Hyden for 56 years until he retired in 2010. He was a long standing member of the Kentucky Dental Association where he served as an executive board member. He was also a member of the American Dental Association. He served as a scout master and was a long standing member of the Lion's Club. He enjoyed bowling and playing golf. His real passion, however, was being a private pilot. Dr. Steven M. Meader was preceded in death by his parents Stephen and Anna Copelean Meader, and his loving and devoted wife Mona Meader. Dr. Steven M. Meader leaves the following relatives surviving: daughters Stephanie Kondoff and her daughter Allison; Jennifer Meader and husband Paul Yetter and their children Olivia and Phillip; sons Steven Meader and wife Vicky and their daughters Sheena and Kara; Bill Meader and wife Kristi and their sons Drew and Seth; Daniel Meader and wife Renee and their son Jordan and daughter Natalie; and Lon Meader and wife Lucy and their sons Bryan, Morgan and Skyler; and great-granddaughter Lily. He is also survived by his brother-in-law Larry Blankenship and wife Peggy and children Larry Lee and Suzette. Funeral services for Dr. Steven M. Meader will be conducted at 2pm Sunday, December 23, 2012 at the Dwayne Walker Funeral Home in Hyden, KY with Dr. Andrew Farmer and Larry Blankenship officiating. The interment will follow in the Hurricane Cemetery, Hyden, KY. Friends may call for visitation Saturday, December 22, 2012 from 5-9pm at the Dwayne Walker Funeral Home.
