TRAVIS Victor "Vic" Wayne, 63, husband of Barbara Ivey Travis, died Saturday, May 30, 2015. He was born August 25, 1951 in Lexington, Kentucky to John William and Virginia Katherine Thomas Travis. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Travis; three daughters, Ashley (Jeff) Orberson, Katie (Sean Garner) Travis and Tyler (Slade) Halvaksz; five grandchildren, Will Orberson, Carter Orberson, Jack Orberson, Benjamin Halvaksz and Jordan Garner; sister, Lawanna Travis. He was preceded in death by his parents, John William and Virginia Katherine Thomas Travis, and sister, Wanda Peele. In 1970, while a member of the Lafayette Generals baseball team, Vic pitched 18 2/3 innings in a 22 inning State tournament game against Madisonville. He gave up only 9 hits and 5 earned runs. When asked if he wanted to come out the answer was, "No!" "How's your arm?" someone asked. He replied, "What arm?" After a successful high school and college baseball career, Vic attended the Harry Wendelstedt Umpire School. He was assigned to the Appalachian, Carolina, Southern and International leagues. After leaving professional baseball, he continued his umpiring career in the OVC, SEC and Sunbelt Conferences. Visitation will be from 4 - 8pm Wednesday, June 3, 2015 at Southland Christian Church on Harrodsburg Rd. Barbara and family, we are so sorry for your loss. We only officially met Vic a couple of years ago. Our nephew Michael Thompson talked of him often regarding their many duck hunting adventures. Then our son Shane became one of Vic's fishing partners. He was always looking forward to the next tournament. He admired Vic so very much as a person and close friend. My husband and myself feel like we knew Vic through the many stories that were shared by Michael and Shane. I know Vic will be deeply missed by the Thompson family. May God comfort and give you and your family peace during this time of grief. Kevin and Teresa Thompson

Barbara and family, I'm so sorry to hear of the loss of Vic. What a wonderfully sweet and friendly person Vic was. I will always hold my high school memories of him close to my heart. My husband interviewed Vic years ago for an article in our magazine, Lexington Family Magazine. He was just as charming and sweet then as he was in high school. We are holding you in our thoughts. Kristi and I spent many days with Vic when we lived at Sutton Place Apartments. We had so many laughs and enjoyed a friendship that has lasted a lifetime. His famous introduction was " Hey Big Man what's up" and then delivered a huge smile. Our condolences go out to Barbara and the family. We will keep you in our prayers here in California. God Bless.

Vic was a true legend. He touched so many people throughout his life. Every time I tie a fishing knot, I remember our times fishing. He taught me how to tie the knot I tie today. He taught me how to catch a bass on a plastic worm or a "jig & pig". He threw on his umpire's mask in his backyard and caught so many of my pitches...even when I had no idea where the ball would end up. He invested time in me when I was a young teenager so many years ago. He lives on through me and so many others that he touched.
It simply doesn't get any better than Vic Travis.

So sorry to hear of the passing of Vic. I work for the Jessamine County Sheriff`s Office and met Vic when he was with AOC. He was a geniune good person who I respected a lot. He was very intelligent person who knew his job well. But above all he carried himself with courage after he found out his illness. Rest easy my friend, God Bless his family.

"Hey Big Man!" These were always the first words out of Vic's mouth. And when you heard them, you knew he was thrilled to see you. There are no words to express the level of admiration the fraternity of umpires hold toward Vic. What a terrific influence he has been - and continue to be - to all the guys that either attended his camps or had the honor of stepping on the filed with him. He loved the game and everything about it, especially the relationships he built and influenced over the years. We lost a great man in our presence - but never in our heart!
