Albert Suffoletta Obituary
GEORGETOWN - Albert (Sandy) Suffoletta, 92, of Georgetown, went be with the Lord on Monday, the 5th of May 2014. A first generation Italian-American, he was born March 11, 1922 in Toronto, Ohio to the late Pasquale and Marguerite Suffoletta. He founded Suff's Furniture & Oriental Rugs in 1961 in Georgetown. Affectionately known as "Suff," he was an honorable World War II veteran of the United States Army Air Corps. He came to Georgetown College in 1946 with three of his army buddies and met Myra, his wife of 62 years. Suff was a charter member and the first chairman of the Scott County Parks and Recreation Board. In 1965, after 30 years of efforts by Georgetown community leaders to raise funds for a public pool, Suff was recommended by the mayor to take up the charge. The funds were raised over the course of the next five years and the pool opened in 1970, two years after the passing of Suff and Myra's son, Robert. The City Council at the time honored Robert by naming the pool and park after him. Albert was also a charter member of the Kentucky Horse Park Board. He is past president of the Chamber of Commerce and Kiwanis Club, a director of the Whitaker Bank Board and a member of St. John Catholic Church. He served as a member of the Georgetown City Council and Vice-Mayor of Georgetown twice. During his time in office, he traveled to Japan and participated in negotiations to bring Toyota to Georgetown. Albert received the "Georgetown-Scott County Outstanding Citizen Award" in 1972, the Georgetown College Alumni Achievement Award in 1988 and the Doug Cox Distinguished Citizens Award in 2005. In addition to his wife Myra, survivors include his son Richard (Sandy) Suffoletta, daughter Jean (Kevin) Tennant, grandchildren Terri (Aaron) Cook, Rick (Caris) Suffoletta and Lilly Tennant and great-grandchildren Vito and Cora Suffoletta, and Grace and William Cook. He was preceded in death by his son Robert. Visitation will be Wednesday, May 7th from 11am-2pm at St. John's Catholic Church in Georgetown. The funeral services will immediately follow at St. John's at 2pm. Services are arranged by Tucker, Yocum, & Wilson Funeral Home.
