Kelly Haley Obituary
PARIS - Kelly Cunningham Haley, 98, passed away on Monday, May 26, 2014 in Shelbyville, Kentucky. He was born February 22, 1916 in Clintonville, Kentucky, son of the late Isaac Cunningham and Blanche Thompson Haley. Kelly was a graduate of Paris High School and the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture and was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity. In 1941, he married Elizabeth Gorham Darnaby. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was in Officer Candidate School at Fort Knox when the war ended. Kelly coached basketball at Clintonville High School and taught Vocational Agriculture at Clintonville High School, Center Hill High School, and Bourbon Vocational High School. He worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture for three years on tobacco markets in Georgia, North Carolina, and Kentucky. He farmed for several decades and was active in farm organizations. Kelly was an advisor in soil conservation service and received the Master Conservationist Award. He received several distinguished Alumnus awards from the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture and from the University of Kentucky Alumni Association. Governor Bert Combs commissioned him a Kentucky Colonel and appointed his as Magistrate on the Bourbon County Fiscal Court to succeed his uncle, William Kelly Haley, a position he held for twenty years. In 1962, he was selected as Chairman of the Board of Clintonville Cemetery and served as Chairman until 1986 and continued on the board until 2009. Kelly was a member and Elder Emeritus of Clintonville Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) where he served as chairman for several terms. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Haley, Shelbyville; three children, Ann Thompson Haley (Jerry) Morris, Shelbyville; Kelly Darnaby (Marilyn) Haley, Evansville, Indiana; Elizabeth Carol (Walter) Gander, Shelby County; six grandchildren, Kelly Clayton (Maggie) Haley, Portland, Oregon; Kari Haley Dornburg, Evansville, Indiana; Leslie Thomas (Kara) Shepherd, III, Tell City, Indiana; Elizabeth Haley Shepherd, York, Maine; Virginia Gander Hazelwood, Maineville, Ohio; Rebecca Gander (Josh) Gedney, Jeffersonville, Indiana; nephew, Frank McCracken Jr.; first cousin, D. Alvin Hinton Thompson and his wife Dr. Mona Thompson; sister-in-law, Jane Carol Darnaby Minton, and her son, Charles Robert Minton. He was preceded in death by a brother, Albert Thompson Haley; and a sister, Clara McCracken. Funeral services will be 1pm Thursday, May 29, at the Clintonville Christian Church by Pastor Leslie Thomas Shepherd, III with burial in Clintonville Cemetery. Visitation will be after 9:30am Thursday at the church.
