LIGON Robert Emmett, Jr., LTC Ret. Army, 80, of Lexington, husband of Marilyn Ann Standfield Ligon, died Sun, June, 15 2014 at Thomson-Hood Veterans Center in Wilmore, KY. Born March 29, 1934 in Mayfield, KY, he was the son of the late Emmett Ligon, Sr. and Bessie Deaton Ligon. He was a graduate of Mayfield High School and received his BS from Murray State University in 1956, graduating in the first ROTC class. While in the Army, he earned his Masters from Central Michigan University. LTC Ligon served 23 years in the U.S. Army with two tours in Vietnam, receiving numerous awards and medals, including the Legion of Merit and the Bronze Star. After his military retirement, he was employed for 22 years with the Commonwealth of Kentucky. He was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church, the Fidelis Sunday School Class, and SOCS. The family wishes to extend a special thanks to the Eisenhower Unit at Thomson-Hood Veterans Center for the kindness, compassion, and love they have shown over the past 27 months. Survivors other than his wife include his son, Robert E. (Sandi) Ligon III, Atlanta, GA; step-daughter, Kempa Lynn (Brian) Turner, Lexington, KY; step-grandson, David Justin Taylor; step-granddaughters, Ashley Ann Taylor and Brittany Dickson; and great grandson, Zachary Joy Holder. LTC Ligon was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Stone Ligon. Funeral services will be held 12noon Thu at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home, Harrodsburg Rd. by Rev. Tom Grieb. Burial will follow in Camp Nelson National Cemetery. Visitation will be 5-8pm Wed at the funeral home.
