Horseman and entrepreneur Hilary J. Boone Jr. died Thursday at his home in Lexington. He was 91.
Mr. Boone, a thoroughbred breeder who established Wimbledon Farm in southeastern Fayette County in 1972, was a major supporter of the University of Kentucky. He provided funding for UK's Hilary J. Boone Jr. Faculty Club and Hilary J. Boone Jr. Tennis Center.
Over the years he served on the boards of many organizations and businesses, including Humana Inc., Hinkle Contracting Co., Centre College, Shakertown, Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Hospital and the Headley-Whitney Museum.
A Springfield native, Mr. Boone was a 1941 graduate of UK. While at the university, he was captain of the tennis team. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II.
Survivors include three children, Alyce Boone Hoskins, Elizabeth Van Meter Boone and Samuel Alexander Boone, and seven grandchildren.
Services will be private and there will be no visitation. Memorial gifts are suggested to one's favorite charity. Kerr Brothers Funeral Home on Main Street is handling arrangements.
