Former Republican state lawmaker Dewayne Bunch, who suffered a severe head injury last year while trying to stop a fight at Whitley County High School, has died.

"On behalf of the Kentucky House, I want to extend condolences to the Bunch family during this difficult time and want them to know they are in our thoughts and prayers," House Speaker Greg Stumbo, D-Prestonsburg, said in a written statement on Wednesday afternoon. "DeWayne showed tremendous potential as a legislator, and his wife Regina has done an outstanding job in serving the remainder of his term."

Bunch, a math and science teacher, resigned his seat last year after being injured in April. His wife, Regina Bunch, was the only candidate from either party to seek his seat in a special election.

Regina Bunch said in January that she decided to run for the position because public service meant so much to her husband.

"He worked so hard to win this seat," Bunch said. "I just wanted to do this for him.
