Charles Palmer Obituary
PALMER Charles E Jr., 79, husband of Betty Jo Martin Palmer, died Tues. Jan. 1, 2013. He was a retired attorney who had practiced with Stites & Harbison most of his 41 year career. Born in Shelbyville, he was the son of the late Dr. Charles E. and Jean Small Palmer. He was a distinguished graduate of Kentucky Military Institute in 1951 and in 1957 received his BS from UK where he served as President of the Student Government Association, the Inter Fraternity Council and the Kappa Alpha Order simultaneously and was a member of ODK Honorary. He earned his JD from the UK Law School in 1958 and was a member of a number of professional associations including the American, Kentucky, Fayette and Federal Bar Assns., Defense Research Institute, and was the first Attorney in KY, without a medical degree, to be inducted into the American College of Legal Medicine. His admissions included the U.S. and KY Supreme Courts and the Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit. Charles served as a Commission Member with the KY Dept. of Fish and Wildlife Resource from 1972-1988 and served 2 terms as Chair. He served as a Director of the Bluegrass Sportsman League for 20 yrs., was a KY Conservation Officer and President of the KY State Rifle and Pistol Assn. and was a charter and founding member of the Bluegrass Chapter of Ducks Unlimited. He was known for his storytelling, hunting, the outdoors and love of dogs. He was a founding member and Past-President of the St. Ives Law Journal Club and served as a director of the Lexington Jaycees, Florence Crittenden, Big Brothers and the Fayette County Police and Fireman's boards. He was a long time member of Christ Church Cathedral, where he served in many capacities including the Vestry and welcome center volunteer. He was a member of the Idle Hour Country Club, Naples Lakes Country Club and an affiliate member of Trinity-by-the-Cove, Naples, FL. He was a life member of the UK Alumni Assn. and a UK Fellow. Charles had type I insulin dependent diabetes for over 60 years and no one ever heard him complain about it. Besides his wife of 56 years, he is survived by a son, Charles Rodgers Palmer (Selene) and two grandchildren, Curan Ko and Merrell Meili, Arlington, VA; a sister-in-law, Ann Rodgers Ashley, Georgetown, KY and his faithful black lab, Bitsy. Services 10:30am Sat., Jan.5th at Christ Church Cathedral with The Very Rev. Carol Wade officiating. Private burial will follow in the Cathedral Columbarium. Visitation 3-6 pm Fri. at the Cathedral. Honorary pallbearers will be John L. Butler, William C. Davis, Louis Lee Haggin III, The Hon. Hanly Ingram, Susan Irwin, Sidney Kinkead, Ann LeRoy, Tim Lucas, R. Douglas McCullough, George Mills, Margaret Pisacano, Gardner Turner and members of the St. Ives Journal Club.
