PITTS Laura Meinhardi, 52, passed away on Thursday, December 5, 2013 after making a valiant effort in her fight against cancer. Throughout her struggle, Laura showed an indomitable spirit and distinguished herself by remaining dignified and courageous in the face of her disease. A native of Whitehall, Michigan, Laura earned a degree of Bachelor of Science in Home Economics from Abilene Christian University in Texas and a Master of Art Education degree from the University of Georgia. A much-loved teacher at high schools in Texas and North Carolina and, for ten years, East Jessamine Middle School in Nicholasville, Kentucky, Laura won the lasting admiration and respect of both students and colleagues. In 1998, Laura was voted Teacher of the Year at Thomasville High School in North Carolina, a school at which she established a Peer Helper program that flourished under her guidance. Admired for her winning smile and sweet disposition, Laura was a caring and compassionate person who comported herself with dignity and grace. She was a dutiful daughter, devoted sister and a tenderhearted friend to many. To her husband, she was a loving wife and best friend beyond compare, a special person with whom he had the great good fortune to share twenty years of marriage. Laura's life was one well lived and her passing is keenly felt. She is survived by her husband, Francis D. "Jim" Pitts of Lexington, KY, mother, Violet J. Meinhardi of Lexington, KY, brother, Willis J. Meinhardi of Columbus, OH, and numerous relatives from Alaska, California, Michigan, New Hampshire and Texas who shared many happy times with her. A memorial service in celebration of her life is being planned for a future date.
