John Chandler Obituary
LONDON - John H. Chandler was born in Mershons, KY (Laurel County), on August 11, 1934 to Raymond and Nancy Proffitt Chandler. He attended Hazel Green High School (London) and graduated from Hamilton High School (OH). He came from humble beginnings and accomplished many great things in his life. He always put his family first, especially his two children. He believed in the value of education and hard work and instilled those values in his children. He was a strong believer in the Christian faith and a dedicated servant to his community. He served his country in the US Army, and began his career in manufacturing after being honorably discharged from the Army. He received many promotions and transfers in his manufacturing career, and attended night classes at local colleges. But, his heart was always with the people of Southeastern Kentucky. In 1969, he took the bold step of moving his family to Corbin, KY to establish a real estate firm. He educated himself in the Real Estate and Appraisal professions, earning several difficult professional designations. He became heavily involved in the Cumberland Valley Board of Realtors (CVBR) and the Kentucky Association of Realtors (KAR) and developed many lifelong relationships with his fellow realtors. He was active in the CVBR and KAR until his death. The members of these organizations were a second family to him. He was elected to every office in the KAR during his career, including 2003 KAR President. He also served as a State Director, Vice President of the KAR Affinity Program, a member of the Executive Committee Leadership Team, and Chairman of the KAR Finance and Investment Committees. In addition, he served on the Professional Standards Committee, the State Mediation Panel, the Kentucky Real Estate Education Panel and two terms as President of the Appraisal Institute Bluegrass Chapter. In 1989, 1996, and 2002, he was named Cumberland Valley Board Realtor of the Year. In 1998, he was recognized as Kentucky Realtor of the Year and the Appraisal Institute Bluegrass Appraiser of the Year. In 2012, he was awarded the highest honor in the KAR - the KAR Distinguished Service Award, which is given to someone who has provided outstanding contributions and service to the real estate industry and his local community. One of his favorite quotes was "All of our dreams can come true - if we have the courage to pursue them." (Walt Disney). He achieved all of his dreams and will always be remembered as a selfless father, a great friend, and a true contributor to his profession and community. He is survived by his two children, Mark D. Chandler (Laura) of Louisville, KY, and Beverly S. Chandler (Susie) of Georgetown, KY; three grand-daughters, Elizabeth, Annie, and Lucy Chandler of Louisville, KY; one sister, Enola Beauchamp of California; one brother, Marvin B. Chandler of Hamilton, OH, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a special grandfather, Tilford Proffitt, and his brother David Chandler. Funeral services for John H. Chandler will be conducted on Thursday, March 6, 2014 at 11am in the chapel of House-Rawlings Funeral Home with Bro. Bobby Joe Eaton officiating. Burial will follow at Rough Creek Cemetery. The family of John H. Chandler will receive friends after 5pm on Wednesday, March 5, 2014 at House-Rawlings Funeral Home. Donations may also be made to the London Christian Homeless Shelter, 220 E 4th St., London, KY 40741.
