James Sacca Obituary

SACCA James William, Jr., 85 of Lexington, KY, died March 7, 2015 surrounded by his family. Born July 26, 1929 in Lockport, NY to the late James and Susan Sacca, Jimmy's athletic talent led to a football scholarship at Western Kentucky University. While at WKU he found his life's passion as the lead singer of the vocal group The Hilltoppers and his life's love, Annie Rivers Holloway, to whom he was married for more than 62 years. Jimmy's legacy is hallmarked by three devoted sons, Jimmy (Janice), Terry (Michele), and Tommy (Elizabeth); along with 12 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Elma Scapelliti and a host of nieces and nephews. Jimmy's college career was cut short when he was drafted into the United States Army; he honorably served his country in Okinawa, Japan. Returning home, he toured the world with The Hilltoppers singing their top 10 hits "Trying", "Marianne," "I'd Rather Die Young" and their biggest selling hit, "P.S. I Love You," which received a Gold Disc. They would appear on the Ed Sullivan Show, Perry Como Show, American Bandstand and Patti Paige Show to name a few. Jimmy received multiple awards throughout his career including the 1954 WNEW popularity pole voted "Americas Favorite Vocal Group," as well as induction into the National Vocal Group Hall of Fame and Kentucky Music Hall of Fame. He was a proud Kentucky Colonel, enjoyed time with his family, horse racing, and he continued pursuing his passion for music throughout his life by helping young groups strive for their dreams in the world of music. Expressions of sympathy can be made to the Jimmy Sacca lead singer of The Hilltoppers Music Scholarship Fund in the College Heights Foundation at Western Kentucky University. The address is: College Heights Foundation, Western Kentucky University, 1906 College Heights Boulevard, Bowling Green, KY 42101. Visitation will be held at Kerr Brothers at 3421 Harrodsburg Road on Wed, March 11, beginning at 10:30am. Funeral service commencing at 12:30pm Wed with interment following at Bluegrass Memorial Gardens.

Was going to call him and see how he was doing, hadn't seen him in 10 years and now I have found out I have waited too late to see or talk to him, he would book my band in Vicksburg and Jackson Ms. he was a great fellow to work with, very professional and never lied to the band always shot straight, and also such a great talent! I will miss talking to him in person and over the phone, I was hoping he could get me some more bookings? Rip Love you Jimmy

Anne, Jimmy, Terry, & Tommy, didn't know until after a week that "DAD" passed. Called Mom & she filled me in on the details. Before Dad went into the hospital, I would speak to him weekly by phone, sometimes for an hour or more. I miss those calls & I miss you "JIMMY" RIP

Dear Sacca Family, we're so very sorry to hear of Jimmy's passing. I loved working with Jimmy over the many years, starting in 1980; I am an entertainment agent, as he was and Bill McCoy had a band that Jimmy worked with. He was a fabulous man and he and I had many laughs over the phone while talking business. He always had a good sense of humor. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all during this difficult time. God Bless ~ Cindy Olson and Bill McCoy, Sight and Sound Productions.

Annie Rivers, Jimmy, Terry & Tommy, I was so sorry to hear of your loss. Jim gave me one of his albums when still living in Jackson MS which I still have and treasure. Your Mother and I were best friends at Hollandale High, a beautiful lady married to a handsome man! All of you are in my thoughts and prayers, I will miss a very talented husband, father and grandfather. Mary Patricia Wright, Germantown, TN.

I was from Caverna High School in Horse Cave, Kentucky, and the Hilltoppers' music was on the juke box in Parkland Drugs, where I worked, in Cave City. Their music informed much of my teen-age-hood, and I went on to become a professional musician. The songs that Jimmy sang the lead on became part of the fabric of my life, as it did many people, and some of my teachers at Western, also, realized the contributions the Hilltoppers made to the American Popular Music history. "Trying" is still one of the most important recordings for that era with vocal groups, so Jimmy's legacy and the influence he and the others had, will live on. I'm so sorry I did not get to meet him, though I eventually met all the other three members. GodSpeed, and all best wishes to his wife, family and friends. He was one of the people that made the rest of us proud to be a part of the WKU family in the 50s. All best regards, Beegie Adair, Franklin, Tenn.
