KINSTON - After a lifetime of devotion to God, John D. Callihan, 94, of Kinston, went to his eternal rest on Good Friday, April 18, 2014, after a brief illness. John served his country honorably in the Army Air Corp, 100 th Bomb Group of the Mighty Eighth during World War II as a mechanic on the B-17 bombers stationed in England where he met his wife Monica. John was well known as the owner and operator of Herring-Curle small engine shop. He attended Gordon Street Christian Church. He was preceded in death by his wife of almost 60 years, Monica Callihan; his parents, John Callihan and Lilly High Callihan; his brother Raymond, and his sisters, Gertrude and Ruth. He was also preceded in death by sons in-law, Henry C. Grant and Michael P. Rice. Left to carry on his legacy are his daughters, Bonnie Grant of Wilmington, and Debbie Rice Smith (Ray) of New Bern; five grandchildren, Stacie, Tony, Mandy, Vickie, and Michael; six great-grandchildren; his special "sweetie," Mattie Ham and several nieces and nephews. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 23, 2014, at Gordon Street Christian Church with the Rev. Mark Benson officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Burial with military honors will be held at 2 p.m. at Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Jacksonville, N.C. I am so sorry for your loss. I had only met John a couple of times, but from my grandpa stories from the war, I had known him a while. I knew it would be a great story when my grandpa started it off "well John and I". Thoughts and prayers.
