Goldwasser, Joseph Max*
KINSTON | Dr. Joseph Max Goldwasser, age 90, of 1302 Stockton Road, died at his home in Kinston, N.C., on April 15, 2015. Born in New York City on May, 1924, he was the son of the late Irving and Rose Goldwasser. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1943 and served in the Atlantic field of operation. In 1945, he was honorably discharged. Before he was recalled into the service in 1952 where he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, he graduated from Columbia University. He and his late wife Esther made Kinston their home shortly afterward and set up the dental clinic for flight cadets at Stalling Air Base. He prided himself on having the first non-segregated dentist waiting room in eastern North Carolina and often recalled that when he first saw his office on West North Street, it had two waiting rooms. He took out a hammer and removed the sign marked "Colored" locked the door, and never used that room for patients, an extraordinary statement in the early 1950's in North Carolina. He and his late wife also spent months volunteering in Israel, both in dental clinics and teaching English to school children. He was a long standing member of Temple Israel. He is survived by his sister, Susan Price of New York; brother-in-law, Irving Silverberg and wife Hazel, of New York; son Michael Goldwasser and wife Laurie, of Wilmington, N.C.; daughter Lynne Schiftan of Greensboro, N.C.; and granddaughters, Rachel Schiftan, and Molly and Eleanor Goldwasser. Graveside services will be conducted by Rabbi Nicole Luna on Sunday, April 19 at 3 p.m. at Temple Israel Memorial Park (behind Pinelawn Memorial Park). In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the charity of your choice. The family would like to thank Faye Simmons and Antoinette Moore for the excellent care and support during his last days at his home. Arrangements are with Edwards Funeral Home.
