Carmen Morgan Dawkins

GREENVILLE - Carmen Morgan Dawkins, 96, died Sunday, January 20, 2013. Burial will be private in Pinewood Memorial Park. The memorial service will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. at Immanuel Baptist Church in Greenville. The family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall. Born on October 29, 1916, Mrs. Dawkins was the daughter of Arabella Elliott Speight Morgan and Ernest Uriah Morgan. She was a native of Perquimans County and had been a resident of Greenville since 1969. She attended Chowan College and graduated from Meredith College. Mrs. Dawkins received a Masters of Religious Education at The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY. Her primary vocation in life was as a mother to her children and as a helpmate to her late husband, Howard G. Dawkins Sr., a Baptist pastor in North Carolina for many years. After her children were grown, she taught home economics in Forsyth and Pitt Counties. Mrs. Dawkins was a faithful servant in her church throughout her life. She had been a member of Immanuel Baptist Church, serving as a Deacon, Sunday school teacher, and a founder of the Grief Support Group and the Chrismon Committee. A member of the Greenville Service League, she served as chairman of the Charity Ball and on many other committees. She was awarded the Ormond Service Cup and the Agnes Wilkerson Award. She was a member of the Chatham Book Club. In addition, she served as a board member and volunteer of the of Pitt County. Traveling to the beach and to various locations around the world gave her much pleasure. She was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Howard Garrett Dawkins Sr., and two brothers, Ernest Elliott (Ike) Morgan and Thomas Keaton Morgan. Surviving are her children, Dr. Howard Garrett Dawkins Jr. and wife Annette Williams Dawkins, Dr. Frank Morgan Dawkins Sr. and wife Dr. Karen Robbins Dawkins, all of Greenville, and Elaine Dawkins Daves and husband Nicholas Albert Daves, of Winston-Salem; and four grandchildren, Alice Dawkins Mahoney and husband Joseph Merrell Mahoney, of Winston-Salem, Howard Garrett Dawkins III and wife Lynne Pate Dawkins, of Raleigh, Dr. Frank Morgan Dawkins Jr. and wife Dr. Jennifer Immediato Dawkins, of Oxford, Pa., and Dr. John Graves Dawkins and fiancée Shannon Sampson, of San Diego, Calif. Carmen considered one of her greatest honors to be known as "Greatmother" by her nine great-grandchildren, who include Joseph Merrell Mahoney Jr., Carrie Alice Mahoney, Emily Bennett Dawkins, Mary Carmen Dawkins, Sarah Pate Dawkins, Collin Grimner Dawkins, Bailey Lefferage Dawkins, Sidney Morgan Dawkins, and Trevor Joseph Dawkins. She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews and special caregiver, Nan Flake.
