Carrie Mae Whitman Sparks

KINSTON - Carrie Mae Whitman Sparks, 92, of Kinston passed away on Thursday, February 14, 2013. She was born in Duplin County on November 3, 1920 to the late Barney and Bessie Turner Whitman. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Morris K. Sparks; brothers, James, Coy, and Perry Whitman; sister, Dorisey Schmitterling; and step-sisters, Thelma Benton and Pauline Sanderson. Mrs. Sparks was a homemaker and a dedicated, active member of First Baptist Church of Kinston where she held several offices as well as being a member of the Choir for 50 years. She grew up at Kennedy Home and was an officer in the Kennedy Home Alumni Association for 55 years. She also wrote a column for the "Charity and Children" for 18 years. Survivors include her daughters, Mauricia S. Wade and husband Elwood "Skip" Wade, Jr. of LaGrange and Susan Sparks Burns of Conyers, GA; grandchildren, Jeromy Wade and wife Brook of Snow Hill, Jennah W. Becerril and husband Ricardo of Fayetteville, and Clifton R. Burns of Covington, GA; great-grandchildren, Bailey Wade, Jentzen Wade, and Lana Becerril; sister, Betty King and husband K. C.; step-sisters, Marlene Pope and husband Herbert, Carolyn Batts, and Swannie Davis and husband Luther; brother, Bobby LeWallen and wife Betty; extended family of sisters and brothers from Kennedy Home; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon Monday, February 18, 2013 at First Baptist Church and other times at the home of Mauricia and Elwood "Skip" Wade at 601 Fire Tower Road, LaGrange. Funeral services will begin at noon with Reverend Sam Jones officiating. Burial will follow at Westview Cemetery.
