Mary Dorcas Harding Carey

KINSTON - Mary Dorcas Carey died on Monday, January 20 at Magnolia Cottage in Dover, N.C. Born in Greenville N.C. on March 8, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Jarvis Benjamin Harding, of Washington N.C., and Mary Higgs Harding, of Greenville. After losing her father at an early age, Dorcas was blessed with a devoted stepfather, Preston Arthur Tyson, of Greenville. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Anthony James Carey, of Kinston and daughter in-law Shelley Carey. Dorcas was a graduate of Converse College in Spartanburg, S.C., and taught high school for several years in Farmville, N.C. Later she became president of A.J. Carey Oil Company. She was a member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Kinston where she served on the vestry. She will be remembered especially for her unfailing generosity of spirit, her playful sense of humor, and her love for family and friends. Dorcas is survived by her sons, Anthony James Carey Jr. and wife Lisa, of Colorado Springs, Colo., Benjamin Arthur Carey and wife Ivy, of Virginia Beach, Va., and Clifton West Carey and wife Linda, of Kinston. Her grandchildren are Anthony Scott Carey of Raleigh, N.C., Patrick Latham Carey and wife Emily, of Raleigh, N.C., Anne Harding Carey of Virginia Beach, Va., Ellen Grace Becker and husband Geoffrey, of Alexandra Va., Michael Christopher Carey of Highland Park, N.J., Pia Alexandra Carey, Lauren Rose Carey, and John Anthony Carey, all of Colorado Springs, Colo., step-grandson Andrew Cheezem of Missoula, Mont., and her first great-grandchild, Hannah Grace. The family would like to give a special thanks to Mrs. Carey's caregivers at Magnolia Cottage (house number1) and her wonderful and caring companions Kelly Mitchell and the late Bertha Wellington. The family will receive friends and family at 1109 Walker Drive in Kinston. Funeral services will be held Thursday, January, 23 at 1 p.m. at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 800 Rountree St. in Kinston, N.C. The Reverend A. Michael Singer will deliver the sermon and the Reverend Thomas Warren will officiate. A private burial service will be held earlier at Westview Cemetery.
