Shirley Smith Stroud

DEEP RUN - Shirley Smith Stroud, born November 6, 1935, went to meet her Lord on Friday, April 26, 2013 at 6:22 pm. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ira and Ora Moore Smith; her brothers, Henry "Dink" Meready, Orion "Billy" Meready, and Walter "Runt" Smith; and one infant son. She is survived by her husband, Haywood Earl Stroud, Sr., of the home. Mrs. Stroud had two daughters, Catherine (Cathy) S. Ewell and husband, Larry, of Deep Run; and Karen S. Humphrey and husband, Dennis, of Deep Run; and two sons, Haywood (John) Stroud, Jr., and wife, Debbie of Kinston, and Michael Deran Stroud of Deep Run. Shirley was not only a grandmother but a loving mother to her twin "boys," Jacob I. Stroud and Derrik M. Stroud, of the home. Shirley was also blessed with five other grandchildren, Christy H. Thigpen and husband Kevin; Mary Heather Kordulewski; Matthew B. Humphrey and his life partner, Scott Grant; Samantha L. Ewell; and Elizabeth M. Humphrey. Shirley was also blessed with two great- grandchildren, Ty Thigpen and Sara Thigpen. Shirley was blessed to have a special little sister, Sheila Smith Burkett and brother-in-law, Wesley L. Burkett, and special nephew, Jerry W. Burkett, all of Kinston. Shirley had a special friend of many years, Faye Deaver. In addition, she had a very special companion at home, Rascal, her Chihuahua. Shirley was blessed to have been a second mom or grandmother to many children whom she babysat for during her lifetime. She was always the matriarch of the family and continued to love, care for, scold and teach all her children and grandchildren about life. She attended Gray Branch Free Will Baptist Church in Deep Run. She was surrounded by many special caregivers, Dr. Qadir and Sherry Smith of Kinston Medical Oncology; John Paul King, nurse with Gentiva; and Amy and Paulette, nurses with Community Hospice, as well as her nursing assistants. The funeral will be on Sunday, April 28, 2013 at 7 p.m. from Pink Hill Funeral Home in Pink Hill. Visitation will follow immediately afterwards. Burial will be on Monday, April 29, 2013 at 10 a.m. at the Eric Sparrow Cemetery in Deep Run. Family will receive friends at other times at the home of Karen Humphrey, 3777 Old Highway 11, Deep Run.
