Tommie Carraway

SNOW HILL-Mr. Tommie Carraway, 84, a loving husband, father and grandfather, died Saturday February 15, 2014. A native of Greene County, he was born July 7, 1929, the son of Alonza and Dora Carraway. Following graduation from the Snow Hill High School he had a short tenure at college before entering the US Army during the Korean War. He returned to Greene County following service and began to make his livelihood tending the soils of his family's farm and soon met his wife to be. Tommie farmed for many years until an opportunity arose for him to begin a position with US Postal Service as a rural mail carrier, where he remained for thirty years until his retirement. A proud veteran, he was very active in the American Legion Shirley Hill Post 94 until his health began to decline. Tommie was a member of Free Union Original Free Will Baptist Church. His surviving family includes his wife of more than 59 years, Martha B. Carraway; daughters, Wanda C. Walston of Stantonsburg and Beth C. Butler and husband, Tom of Harvest, Alabama; grandchildren, Kit Walston and wife, Amy of Pikeville, Katie Butler of Harvest, Alabama, and Patrick Butler and wife, Jordyn of Huntsville, Alabama; and sisters, Grace C. Shirley of Walstonburg and Hazel C. Gillikin of Raleigh. In addition to his parents and several siblings, Tommie was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Vance Walston. Graveside Services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, February 18, at the Snow Hill Cemetery with Reverend Kelley Smart officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
