KINSTON - Bascom Lacue "B.L." Efird Jr. passed away Monday, September 2, 2013. He was born November 19, 1928, in Kinston. He served with a rank of corporal in the U.S. Army, 5th RCT, 1950-1952 during the Korean War. He was wounded in battle and received the Purple Heart accommodation. Upon leaving the service B.L. worked as a mechanic for over 30 years at Turner's Tractor in Kinston; he was also employed at KNC Corporation until his retirement. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Marjorie Taylor; sisters, Irene E. Mewborn, and Peggy E. Mercer; and step-grandchild, Donna Blake Williams.Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, September 5, 2013, from the chapel of Garner Funeral Home with the Reverend Ronnie Davis officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the funeral service and other times at his home. Interment will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, September 6, 2013, at Pinelawn Memorial Park with the Reverend Glassie Locklear officiating.Survivors include his wife of 18 years, Thelma Taylor Efird; his son, Reverend B.L. Efird III and wife Jan, of Wilson; his daughters, Charlene Efird Wade and husband Sidney, and Patsy Efird Gillette and husband Terry, all of Kinston; his sisters, Nina Parker and husband Wilson, of New Bern, Carol Sumrell and husband Charles, of Lake Placid, Fla. and Vickie Efird of New Bern; step-children, Larry Taylor and friend Jennifer, of Pink Hill, James Taylor and wife Theresa, of Kinston, Marie Williams and husband David, of Kinston; grandchildren, Matthew Efird, Jeremy Efird, Sarah Wade Meyer, Adam Wade, Aaron Wade, Stephen Gillette and Stephanie Gillette; step-grandchildren, Chris Taylor, Jason Taylor, Emily Taylor, Taylor Davis and seven great-grandchildren.
