KINSTON - Elbert "Buddy" Woodfin Spear Jr., passed away Sunday, February 23, 2014, at the N.C. State Veterans Home-Kinston. He was born February 4, 1926, in Kinston to Elbert Woodfin Spear Sr. and Alyce Saunders Spear, who preceded him in death. Buddy was an avid commercial fisherman on the White Oak River and he enjoyed watching ECU football games. Elbert graduated from Grainger High School and from East Carolina University with a degree in business administration. He was employed by L.B. Jenkins Tobacco Co. for many years prior to his retirement. He served in the Navy in World War II on the battleship Texas, in the Pacific theater. He was a member of Northwest Christian Church. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, February 28, 2014. Graveside services will be at Westview Cemetery with Pastor Amos Sykes officiating. Survivors include his wife, Gladys Cogdell Spear; three sons, Elbert W. Spear III, Steve Spear and David Spear; a sister Alyce Spear Stroud; and several nieces and a nephew.
