DOVER | Gail Jenkins Merritt, 69, of Dover, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, January 7, 2017, at UNC Lenoir Health Care in Kinston, N.C. The family will receive friends at Howard-Carter Funeral Home on Wednesday, January 11, 2017 from noon to 1 p.m.; the funeral service will begin at 1 p.m. Burial will follow at Pinelawn Memorial Park in Kinston. She was born on June 27, 1947, in Kinston to the late James "Jew Baby" Franklin Jenkins and Virginia Jenkins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Merritt and her parents, James Franklin Jenkins and Virginia Jenkins. She will be missed by many, and is survived by countless friends and extended family, Loretta and Doug Guthrie of Morehead City, Kim and Tim Eubanks (Noah, Angela & Olivia) of Dover, Jan and Bruce Parsons of Kinston, Diane Murphy of Kinston, Irene Wisener of Dover, and William and Carolyn Moore also of Dover. Gail spent her life serving others as a nurse for over 40 years. She worked in the ER, CCU, mental health, and home health. She touched countless lives giving care and sharing her words of wisdom. When Gail saw a need she was always the first to offer assistance. She loved reading and spent countless hours doting over her cats. She was known to ask for paper towels, old towels, and bags of cat food and liter for her birthday so she could donate them and make others aware. She earned her bachelors degree in Literature from the University of Maryland, and earned her LPN and later on her RN from James Sprunt Community College.
