Still missing you

March 22, 2014

My Christmas card was returned today as 'Unable to Forward'. I knew I had the correct address; so I googled and found Herbie's obit. My heart aches, not just because of the loss of my friend, but everyone's friend. Warm, caring, and funny... among many of his attributes - all of which were positive. My deepest sympathy to his family and friends. Herbie will truly be missed.

Thinking about my friend today. This is what I posted on FB when I heard the shocking news: Herbie Coombs, 07/11/1970-08/07/2013. "I got the call today that I didn't want to hear...an old, true friend of ours was talking on the phone..." Received a message from my friend, Rob Augino that our friend, Herbie, had passed away last Wednesday of insidious cancer. Herbie was a huge part of one of the happiest and most serene times in my life. I have remembered so many moments involving him in these last few days, some sarcastic (white Umbro shorts with a scarf, really? and two incredibly tender and loving moments.)He had a certain joie de vivre, was larger than life, and was perpetually interested in others. Personally, he encouraged me to pursue the love of my life (until Samuel), my dreams, and my purpose in life. How many people in a life truly do that? I last talked to him several years ago but know that he knew about my boy, my life. Herbie, knowing you changed me for the better and your passing has reminded me of that. Rest in peace, dear friend, you were a gift to those that knew you and you will be loved and missed forever. Thinking of CAT, Jason Cahill, Rob Augino, Heather Wright, Raymond Skelton, Amber Wright, Debbie Hall, Tina Miller, Renee Mac, Skip Brumley, Kodi McCarson, and others.

I moved from NJ in 2007 and have always had my hair cut by Laura. I therefore got to know Herbie who was always there. He ALWAYS had a smile and like most people, I felt I got to know him. He was never in a bad mood and was a shining light. He was always engaged with his customers and fellow salon clients. He seemed to truly care about everyone. I only learned of his passing yesterday when I went in to get my hair cut. To say he will be missed is an understatement. One can only hope that when we pass on, we will be spoken of so highly. Herbie is an inspiration to all to be that positive light in peoples world. His amazing smile will be greatly missed.

Who could have ever asked for a more loving sweet cousin. I have so many great memories with Herbie. We drove to Mississippi in a hot car a many a day, mad mud pies (which Aunt Rea didn't approve of), hid boiled Easter eggs for at least a week. We shared a lot of great times and I will miss them dearly. I am greatful I was able to make him smile one last time talking about our fun times. I always loved to hear him sing. Not only a wonderful cousin but a great friend I will never forget. I know he is having a grat time in heaven with his Aunt Violet and grandparents. Love and miss you Herbie!

My deepest condolences to all of Herbie's family and friends. He was one of the first people I met in Wilmington who made me feel welcome and loved. The hair style, though always awesome, was the least important thing I came away with after visiting Herbie - he always was interested in my life, my work, my family. I will so miss his laughter, his hugs, the light of his personality. The angels are lucky to have him.

My heartfelt thoughts go out to everyone who was close to Herbie during this time of transition. I hope that you remain surrounded by loved ones in the days that follow. Laughing and crying as you share memories of a very kind, loving, and gentle soul who will be missed by many.

I know that nothing I personally can say or do will make the grieving process easier, but I will share how he impacted my life in a positive way.

I will forever be grateful that he opened Evolution Salon and Spa. He created a place where I felt welcomed during a very tough time in my life. I would walk away from my appointment feeling like I mattered and of course with a fabulous Haircut. It was always an uplifting experience. :)

In the future, every time I go into Evolution or any other Salon I will say a prayer for his loved ones that God will carry them through the “so-not-so good” days and if they need a reminder that they are not alone that someone will be around to offer a simple hug. Like Herbie always did for everyone else.
