KINSTON - The Rev. H.T. "Tom" Waits, 84, entered peacefully into the presence of his Lord and Savior Saturday, January 4, 2014 at Lenoir Memorial Hospital surrounded by family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Levy and Ethel Waits, and his sister, Alice Wemes. Tom is survived by his wife, Kathryn of the home; daughter, Susan Davis of Goldsboro; sons, Joe Mike Baker (Jessica) of Kinston and Doug Baker (Jennifer) of Garner; grandchildren, Danny Ray Davis and Kevin Davis of Goldsboro, Ginger Stillwell and Seth Baker of Kinston, and Gracie and Drew Baker of Garner; and three great-grandchildren. He also has one surviving sister, Ophelia Adams of Shelbyville, Ky. He was born January 17, 1929 in Bagdad, Ky. After graduation, he entered the U.S. Air Force and served for 10 years until called into the ministry. He was ordained by the Southern Baptist Convention on July 16, 1961 and faithfully served for 52 years. He pastored at First Southern Baptist Church, Floyds Knobs, Ind., Rosewood Baptist Church, Goldsboro, Hillcrest Baptist Church, Greensboro, First Baptist Church, Snow Hill, Centerville Baptist Church, Kelly, Pisgah Baptist Church, Smithfield, Sandy Bottom Baptist Church and Calvary Baptist Church, both in Kinston. Tom had a passion for Sunday School and served as Sunday School Consultant for the Baptist State Convention of NC for many years. The family will receive friends from 6-7 p.m. Tuesday, January 7, 2014 at Immanuel Baptist Church. Funeral services will begin at 7 p.m. with the Revs. Jon Campbell, Allen Ham and Doug Baker officiating. The family will also greet friends following the service and other times at the home. Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 8, 2014 at the Pisgah Baptist Church Cemetery in Smithfield.
