John Mark Kennedy Obituary
CHARLOTTE – John Mark Kennedy, 56, passed away peacefully after a courageous four-and-one-half year battle with lung and brain cancer. Mark was born on May 2, 1962, and died on May 20, 2018. Mark loved life and lived it to the fullest. He will be remembered for his quick wit and his love of laughter. Instead of collecting material things, Mark collected friends and created fond memories. Originally from Kinston, Mark made a point to ride around the farms whenever he was at home. He loved visiting his Mom, with whom he had a special relationship. Mark had a passion for Beach music and dancing. For decades, he was a regular at SOS (Society of Stranders) at Myrtle Beach, S.C., and was loved by his SOS family. Mark also enjoyed his work at Piedmont/US Air/American Airlines in both customer service and operations. After living in Baltimore, Myrtle Beach, and Wilmington, he ultimately landed in Charlotte, where he lived for 28 years. His American Airlines family has been a tremendous source of support throughout his illness. To the amazement of his co-workers and family, Mark continued to work full time after his first brain surgery in January 2014 until September 2017. Throughout his illness, Mark rarely complained. He was a cancer warrior who wanted to live so he could travel to places still on his bucket list. He outlived all projections through sheer determination and his hopeful outlook. Mark's family would like to thank Dr. Jennifer Atlas and her oncology team at Levine Cancer Institute in Charlotte, the staff of Levine and Dickson Hospice House in Charlotte, and the staff of the SECU Hospice House in Smithfield. Additionally, his family extends unending gratitude to his amazing friends who drove him to doctor's appointments, scans, chemo, and radiation, as well as visited, brought food, managed prescriptions, or sat by his bedside. Mark is survived by his mother, Meta Mae Kennedy of Kinston; and his siblings, Billie Jo Kennedy Cockman, Bruce Kennedy and Ethlyn Kennedy. He is also survived by his nephews, Forrest Kennedy and his wife Krystal, Eric Respess, Zachary Respess, and James Cockman, and by his niece, Paige Cockman and her husband Josiah Shackleton. A visitation will be held at Edwards Funeral Home at 702 North Queen Street in Kinston on Thursday, May 24, from 2:00 until 4:00 PM. There will also be a visitation in Charlotte at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be made to the Carolinas Brain Cancer Fund. Checks can be made to "Carolinas HealthCare Foundation." Address as follows: Carolinas Brain Cancer Fund, c/o Carolinas HealthCare Foundation, 208 East Blvd. Charlotte, NC 28203. Gifts can also be made online at www.givecarolinas.org/find-your-cause/cancer. Online condolences may be expressed at edwardsfhc.com. Arrangements by Edwards Funeral Home & Cremations.
