KINSTON - Julia Elizabeth "Betty" Barbre, age 79, passed away Monday August 6, 2012, at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, N.C. Miss Barbre was born in Lenoir County on January 26, 1933. She was the daughter of the late Ray S. Barbre Jr. and Julia Grace Venters Barbre. She attended Grainger High School, Stephen's College in Columbia, Missouri and Atlantic Christian College in Wilson, N.C. She began her teaching career as a civilian for the U.S. Army at Port Canaveral, Florida, Frankfort, Germany and Okinawa, Japan. She later returned to Kinston and taught Kindergarten at Arendell Parrott Academy for 25 years, retiring in 1996. She was a member of Queen Street United Methodist Church where she was active with the Children's Church, King's Kids, Bible school and Sunday school. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday August 9, 2012, at Queen Street United Methodist Church with the Rev. Allen Bingham and the Rev. Craig Ham officiating. Interment will be at Westview Cemetery. She is survived by her brothers, Ray Barbre Jr. and wife Becky, and their daughter, Morgan Elizabeth Barbre all of Greenville, N.C., Price Weaver and wife Sandy, of Smyrna, Ga. and a nephew, Ray Barbre lll of Washington, N.C. She was preceded in death by her nephew, Jonathan M. Barbre. The family will receive friends at the church Thursday at 1:30 p.m. until service time and other times at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Barbre, 412 Oxford Road Greenville, N.C. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Queen Street United Methodist Church P.O. Box 508 Kinston, N.C. 28502-0508 or to The Betty Barbre Teaching Scholarship Fund c/o Arendell Parrott Academy 1901 Dobbs Farm Road Kinston, N.C. 28504. Arrangements are with Edwards Funeral Home.
