KINSTON - Lemuel Joseph "Doc" Stroud Sr., 82, passed away Wednesday evening, July 10, 2013, at his home. Doc was born in Lenoir County, North Carolina, and was an active member of Gordon Street Christian Church. He graduated from Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science. Doc was a lifelong funeral service professional having served Kinston and the surrounding communities for more than 50 years. Doc had a passion for the martial arts and in 1971 he founded and owned Stroud's School of Martial Arts. He proudly stated the school was built by his students and himself. The school remains active to this day under the direction of his close friend, Kyoshi Richy Honeycutt. Doc was a 10th degree Black Belt in the art of Jiu Jitsu. He trained internationally and was greatly respected near and far for his skill and devotion. Doc readily gave his time and compassion to his family, friends and community. He had a passion for molding young people with character, discipline and integrity. Doc helped any person wanting to better themselves regardless of their station in life or experience level. He gave and received respect. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Pat; his sister, Helen Grayson; and his brother, Bill. Surviving are two sons, Lemuel Joseph "Joe" Stroud and his wife Betty Sue, of Morehead City, North Carolina, and Dr. Paul Dorn Stroud and his wife Beth, of Winston-Salem, North Carolina; five grandchildren; four sisters, Marie Price, Carol Hardison, Dorothy Alphin and Judy Croom, all of Kinston; and two brothers, William Stroud of Kinston, and Franklin Stroud of Grifton, North Carolina. Visitation will be held from 7 until 9 o'clock Friday evening at Howard-Carter Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held at 11 o'clock Saturday morning at Gordon Street Christian Church with the Reverend Dr. Mark Benson officiating. Burial will follow in Westview Cemetery.
