PELETIER - Marvin Thigpen, age 79, went to be with his Lord and Savior on June 21, 2018 at his home in Peletier, NC. He was born March 19, 1939 in Trenton, NC to Guion and Pearline Banks Thigpen. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters, Helen and Ellen Thigpen and his loving wife of 54 years, Barbara Cooper Thigpen. He is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Rene Thigpen Baum (Scott), Sandra Thigpen Hunt (Kenneth), and Lisa Thigpen Ellis (Glenn) all of Clayton, NC; grandchildren, Ashley Baum VanderVelde (Keith) of Willow Spring, NC, Brandon Marvin Thigpen of Wilmington, NC, Nicole Olivia Baum of Washington, DC, Jacob Kenneth Hunt of Clayton, NC, and Grayson Morgan Ellis; great-grandchildren, Chloe Elizabeth VanderVelde and Owen Kenneth Hunt; sisters, Evelyn Moore of Kinston, NC, Kathryn Lowe, Sena Carol Anderson, and Sue Deppen, all of Jacksonville, NC; brothers, Tillman Thigpen of Trenton, NC and Robert Thigpen of Kinston, NC; and several nieces and nephews. Marvin served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1956 to 1960 in San Diego, California where he met his beloved wife Barbara. He was a General Contractor building custom homes in Wake and Carteret Counties, NC. Marvin and Barbara raised their family in Garner, NC and later moved to Cedar Point, NC. As a young man, Marvin piloted his own plane and after retirement, he continued his adventurous spirit, traveling the country with Barbara in their motor home, sightseeing and visiting family and friends. Most recently, he enjoyed boating, fishing and gardening. Our father, grandfather, brother and friend will be missed beyond measure. As our mentor, we will be forever grateful for the wisdom and kindness he shared with everyone around him. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday July 14, 2018 at Jones Funeral Home, 407 Old Hammock Road, Swansboro, NC, followed by a graveside service at Gethsemane Memorial Park, 700 NC-24, Newport, NC.
