KINSTON - Mary Ruth Baker Amyette Henderson, 86, died December 15, at Magnolia Cottage Care near Kinston. She was the daughter of the late John Martin and Ruth Loftin Baker of the Southwood community. She was born May 17, 1927 and was educated at Southwood School and East Carolina Teachers College. Mary married John Edward (Jack) Amyette in 1949. Jack died in 1959 at age 31 of bulbar polio. They had two daughters and one son who Mary raised as a widow and who she loved dearly. She was employed as an accounting aide for 25 years until her second marriage in 1984 to widower, John P. Henderson, Jr., MD. Dr. Henderson died June 19, 2012. Mary's interests were gardening, traveling, needlework, reading, playing bridge and swimming. In her 70's, she taught senior citizens to swim in Leesburg, Florida for several winters. In addition to her parents and both of her husbands, Mary was preceded in death by six brothers and two sisters: John Curtis Baker, Newton D. Baker, Clarence Lee (Duck) Baker Sr., William Douglas Baker, Billy Wayne Baker Sr., Robert Earl Baker, Margaret Wray Baker, and Iris Elizabeth Baker Dupree. She also was predeceased by her son-in-law, Carl Duncan Garner. Survivors include her two daughters, Jacki Amyette Epperson and her husband, Tom, of Durham, and Jennifer Amyette Garner of Kinston; and her son, John E. Amyette, Jr. of Vero Beach, Florida. Mary leaves also seven grandchildren: Will and Dan Epperson; John Garner and wife, Jennifer; Sarah Garner Cannady and husband, Kyle; and Zeb Garner. She also had a great granddaughter, Zoe Elizabeth Cannady. Mary has one remaining brother, Joseph Bryan (J.B.) Baker and his wife, Dianne, with whom she was very close. There are also 20 nieces and nephews and their families. Other survivors are four stepchildren: Mary Lynn Henderson Howell and husband, Jack, of New Bern; John P. Henderson III of Raleigh; Frederick S. (Sandy) Henderson and wife, Polly, of Kinston; Leanna Henderson Whitehead and husband, Mike, of Stantonsburg. There are also five step-grandchildren, who Mary loved as her own: MacGavock Henderson Edwards and husband, Jeff; Will and Matt Whitehead; and Michael and Julie Henderson. She had one step great grandson, Elijah Edwards. A service of remembrance will be held at 3 p.m. on Sunday, December 29, at Edwards Funeral Home in Kinston. The family will receive visitors beginning at 2 p.m., prior to the service. Donations in Mary's memory may be sent to the , the John C. Baker Memorial Scholarship or the Robert E. Baker Memorial Scholarship (both at Southwood Christian Church, 1027 Hwy 58 South, Kinston, NC 28501), or to Northwest Christian Church 2009 Carey, Kinston, N.C. 28501.
