KINSTON - Robert Lorenzo "Papa" Everett, 82, of Kinston passed away on Friday, December 27, 2013. Born on August 24, 1931, he was the son of the late Robert Council Everett and Pattie Smith Everett. Robert was the oldest of four, having two brothers, Rudolph Everett of Robersonville and Clayton Everett of Whitehurst Station, and one sister, Shelvia Everett Whitehurst and husband Shelton of Tarboro, all of whom survive him. Robert graduated from Robersonville High School in 1949 where he served as a bus driver. After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served from January 17, 1951 to November 23, 1954, being stationed in Japan. He attended King's Business School and East Carolina University where he received his Bachelor's and Master's Degrees. Robert married Marie Ayers Everett on July 27, 1957, and they were married for over 54 years until Marie passed away on October 13, 2011. They lived several places over their marriage including Raeford and Concord, N.C., but their home was Kinston where they raised two daughters, Patricia Everett Heath and husband C. Andy Heath, of Wilmington and Susan Everett Chapman and husband Charles M. Chapman, of Hookerton. They were the proud grandparents of two grandchildren, Andrew Everett Heath and Danielle Suzanne Chapman. Robert began his career as a Probation Officer in Raeford. He also served as the Director of Stonewall Jackson School in Concord for several years. He retired from State service for the first time in 1984, but continued to teach part-time for both Wesleyan College and Pitt Community College. He eventually came out of retirement and served as the Director of the Criminology Department at Pitt Community College. Robert retired the second time in 1996. After retirement, he spent time at his beloved beach home at Emerald Isle. He and Marie started traveling, enjoying an Alaskan Cruise and a Hawaiian vacation. Robert also traveled to Europe with his brothers to learn the Everett ancestry, and eventually wrote an Everett Family book. Anyone who spent time with Robert knows that you would always learn a lesson before leaving.
