KINSTON - Jake Thomas "Sonny" Herring III, 63, of Kinston, passed away Wednesday, December 18, 2013. Sonny was born October 1, 1950 in Lenoir County to the late Jake Thomas Herring Jr. and Christine Gautier Herring. Sonny retired from UPS in 2011 following thirty nine years of dedicated service. He was part of the UPS Circle Of Honor and was recognized for 35 years of safe driving. Sonny enjoyed vintage cars and tractors. He was proud of his vintage car collection which included a 1940 Ford Deluxe, 1964 Ford Galaxy 500 XL,1972 Corvette, 1969 Ford Mach 1 Mustang and his Jeep Scrambler. Sonny loved collecting antiques whether it was old bottles or vintage signs. Sonny enjoyed trips to the family farm for quality time in the family cabin or a ride through the field on his tractor. Sonny loved good conversation, was quite the jokester but most importantly, cherished time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren, Caroline and Jake. A service of remembrance will be held Friday, December 20, 2013 at 7 p.m. from Rouse Funeral Home with Rev. Ronnie Hobgood and Rev. Randy Herring officiating. Interment will be Saturday at 11 a.m. from Flatfield Cemetery. Mr. Herring is survived by his wife, Linda Wilkins Herring; son, Charlie Herring and wife, Lori of Wilson; brother, Frank Herring and wife, Sherie of La Grange; two grandchildren, Caroline Herring and Jake Herring; brothers and sisters-in-law, Bobby and Janice Wilkins of Durham, Dennis and Beth Wilkins of Dover and Frances and Leon Cash of Kinston; along with a number of other special family members.
