KINSTON - Vera Byrd Baker, 98, of Kinston, passed away Tuesday, February 4, 2014, at her home. Vera was born February 10, 1915, in Lenoir County to the late George Allen Byrd Sr. and Alice Fields Byrd. A talented artist, Vera and her late husband, Walter Baker Sr., owned and operated Baker Studios in Kinston for many years. Vera was the oldest member of Institute United Methodist Church. She cherished her trips to Topsail Island and found great pleasure in fishing and crabbing while at the coast. A service of remembrance will be held Thursday, February 6, 2014, at 2 p.m. from Rouse Funeral Home with the Rev. Ray Teague officiating. Interment will follow at Pinelawn Memorial Park. Mrs. Baker is survived by three siblings, George Allen Byrd Jr. of Snow Hill, Evelyn Byrd Sugg of La Grange and Alice Star Cerasia of New Jersey; her beloved cat, Snoopy; along with a number of nieces and nephews.
