KINSTON - Anita Slater Exum, age 73, died at home on February 9, 2014, after a lengthy illness. Born in New Bern, she was the daughter of Joseph and Mildred (Billie) Slater. Anita graduated from New Bern High School, attended UNC Greensboro and later graduated from Lenoir Community College with a degree in Fine Arts. She went on to obtain a GRI from UNC Chapel Hill and worked for years as a real estate broker in Kinston. A loyal member of St. Mary's Episcopal Church, Anita served on the Altar Guild, as President of the Episcopal Church Women and as Clerk of St. Mary's Vestry. She was an active member of her local Community Council for the Arts and a longtime member of the Lenoir County Art Study Club serving one term as president. Anita loved to paint and her enthusiasm extended to the state level where she served on the Board of the North Carolina Watercolor Society as Secretary/Treasurer. Anita, at one time an avid water skier, met Ashe, her husband of 53 years, at Camp Seagull where both were counselors on the motor boating staff. She was a wonderful wife, mother and devoted grandmother whose family relished spending time with her. Her kind heart welcomed countless stray dogs and cats that she adopted and nurtured back to health. Usually a soft, laid-back personality, she amused and thrilled her friends as she became a skilled, fierce competitor at the bridge table both at a social level as well a tournament duplicate player. Anita is survived by her husband, Ashe Exum Sr.; her brother, Joe Slater Jr. and his significant other, Mary Beth of Pagoso Springs, Colorado; her sister, Pat Holscher and husband Fred, of Washington, North Carolina; son, Ashe Exum Jr. and wife April, of Kinston; daughters, Elizabeth Whiteside and husband Roger, of Raleigh and Anne Barnes and husband George, of Raleigh; grandson, Ashe Exum III; and granddaughters, Sarah Sutton, Jordan Exum, Anne Slater Barnes and Elizabeth Barnes. A memorial service for Anita will be held at St. Mary's Episcopal Church on Thursday, February 13, 2014, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 800 Rountree Street, Kinston, North Carolina 28503, or the Lenoir County SPCA, PO Box 1481, Kinston, North Carolina 28503.
