FARMVILLE - Mr. Larry Alton Harrell, 74, formerly of Snow Hill, died Friday, March 21, 2014. A native of Greene County, he was born November 5, 1939, the son of Alton Floyd Harrell and Sarah Jordan Harrell. Mr. Harrell retired from the Greene County Schools where he was the Audiovisual Coordinator. An active member of Free Union Original Free Will Baptist Church, Mr. Harrell had served in many capacities including as a deacon and chairman of the deacon board; he was very active in the Mary Ellen Shirley Sunday School Class, the Layman's League where he cooked many fish stews and participated in many church pancake suppers, and was active in the church's senior group the Roadrunners. In addition to his parents, Mr. Harrell was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Harris Harrell; and a dear friend, Ray Cunningham. His surviving family includes his son, Dana Harrell and wife Susan, of Farmville; his grandchildren who affectionately called him "Papa," Courtney Harrell and Adam Harrell both of Farmville; sisters Loretta Hamm and husband Stuart, and Penny Sugg and husband Stanley, all of Snow Hill; a dear friend, Alton "Short" Shirley of Walstonburg; and several nieces and nephews. Additionally, he is survived by all of the baseball friends and family he formed through the years attending Adam's baseball games where he encouraged not only his grandson, but all of the members of the team. Funeral services will be held at 6 p.m. Sunday, March 23, at Free Union OFWB Church with the Reverend Kelley Smart officiating. Committal services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 24, at the Snow Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends immediately following the service on Sunday and other times at the residence, 4836 Sylvia Avenue, Farmville. Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made to Free Union OFWB Church, 2573 Firetower Road, Walstonburg, NC 27888.
