RALEIGH - Dr. Lewis H. Stocks III, Ph.D., M.D. died May 23, 2014 after a remarkable and courageous battle with cancer. Dr. Stocks was born July 21, 1941 in Hookerton. He was the son of Lewis H. Stocks Jr. and Sara Matlock Stocks. Dr. Stocks received his BS degree in Pharmacy and graduated magna cum laude from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He received his Ph.D. in Pharmacology from Marquette University, his M.D. from Medical College of Wisconsin, and was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Stocks completed his residency at Duke University, where he served as Chief Resident. He was Board Certified by the American Board of Surgeons and began his career as a General Surgeon in Raleigh in 1976. He served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Raleigh Community Hospital and was the first surgeon to perform laparoscopic surgery, stereotactic breast biopsies, and lung volume reductions in Wake County. After 44 years as a General Surgeon, Dr. Stocks specialized in Age Management. He was happiest when spending time with his family and was an enthusiastic supporter of his children's activities. As a medical volunteer, he made several trips to Haiti. He was a member of White Memorial Presbyterian Church where he has served as PYC Leader and Sunday School teacher. He was a pilot, avid reader, and a continuous learner. Dr. Stocks was predeceased by his father, Lewis Henry Stocks Jr., and brother, Pat Lee Stocks. He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Jackie Bailey Stocks; sons, Lewis Henry Stocks IV, Jaxson Taylor Stocks; daughters, Tia Michelle Stocks, Jennifer Justine Stocks and her husband, Jay Ballenger, and Sara Bailey Stocks. His granddaughters are Braley Stocks, Daisy Ballenger, and his grandson is Elliott Ballenger. Dr. Stocks' surviving mother is Sara Matlock Stocks. His surviving brothers are Bill Stocks, wife Barbara, Donald Stocks, wife Harriett, and Jeff Stocks, wife Pam. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 27 from 5-7 p.m. at their home. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 28 at White Memorial Presbyterian Church in Raleigh. The family will receive friends following the service in the Jane Bell Gathering Space at White Memorial.
