KINSTON – Horace Beecher "Duke" Phillips, 87, of Kinston, peacefully passed away Saturday, June 14, 2014. Horace was born February 27, 1927 in Lenoir County to the late Horace Abbott Phillips and Amelia Bamburger Phillips. He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathleen Albritton Phillips. Horace retired from the North Carolina Department of Transportation and was a member of Grainger Baptist Church. He enjoyed collecting guns, fishing and loved good conversation. A service of remembrance will be held Monday, June 16, 2014 at 7 p.m. from Rouse Funeral Home with Rev. Ivy White officiating. Interment will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. from Pinelawn Memorial Park. Horace is survived by a daughter, Kathy Whitfield and husband, Shag of Kinston; two grandchildren, Tracy Scott Whitfield of Kinston and Kimberly Whitfield Johnson and husband, Ronald of Kinston; three great-grandsons, Caleb Johnson, Whit Johnson and Nicholas Johnson; three sisters, Jennie Penko and husband, Dick of Port St. Lucie, FL, Miriam McCormick of Phoenixville, PA and Delores Swinehart of Fort Lauderdale, FL; and two brothers, Charles Phillips and wife, Bessie of Burlington and John Phillips of Port St. Lucie, FL. Horace was also preceded in death by two sisters, Marlene Surma and Jerri Merkel. The family will receive friends Monday following the service. Online condolences may be expressed at www.rousefh.com.
