KINSTON - 1st Sgt Ret. Jimmie Milton Jones, 80, of Kinston, passed away on Saturday, July 19, 2014. Mr. Jones was born in Jones County on November 25, 1933, to the late Thomas and Gertrud Freeman Jones. He proudly served his country with honor and distinction in the U.S. Army, retiring after 21 years, having served during the Korean Conflict where he received the Combat Infantry Badge, the Presidential Unit Citation and the Parachutist Badge. He served two tours of duty during the Vietnam War. Among his many awards, he received the Bronze Star for gallantry in the face of the enemy. Jimmie was among the first to test-fire atomic rounds from the 8"" artillery pieces in the Nevada Test Site. A disabled American Veteran, he was a member of Faith Lutheran Church; the VFW; an American Legion Life member and the Retired Enlisted Association. Jimmie was a true Patriot! After leaving the military, he was employed by DuPont, retiring as an instructor, teaching new employees and those from other DuPont plants in the daily operations of the spinning machines. Survivors include his wife and the love of his life, Helga Gretschmann Jones of the home; son Robert Jim Jones of Wilmington; daughter Dolores Bradshaw of Wilmington; grandchildren, Erika Rivera and husband, 1st Lt. Roberto Rivera, Ian Jones, Star Jones, and Valarie Bradshaw; great-grandchild Raziella Rivera; brother Jesse Roy Jones of California; sisters-in-law, Judy Jones, Shirley Jones, and Christina Jones; along with many nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m., Thursday, July 24, 2014, at Howard-Carter Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 25, 2014, at Evergreen Memorial Park with Pastor Ron Fletcher officiating. Full military rites will follow the service.
