GRIFTON - Mr. James J. Harkins Jr., 69, of 5995 Waters Edge Drive, passed away Tuesday evening, April 21, 2009, at Lenoir Memorial Hospital. Mr. Harkins was formerly of Long Island, N.Y. and had resided in the Grifton community for more than three years. He will be remem-bered as a loving husband, father and grandfather. Funeral services will be held in Hauppauge, N.Y., with Moloney's Funeral Home assisting the family. Locally a Memorial Service will be held at a later time at the Hugo Free Will Baptist Church with Dr. Charles Russell officiating. Mr. Harkins is survived by his wife, Carol Hinrichs Harkins; sons Jimmy Harkins and Philip Harkins, both of Florida; step-children Michelle Miller of Grifton, Paul Ziems and Greg Ziems, both of Long Island, N.Y.; a sister, Patricia LaFemina of Naples, Fla.; brothers Donald Harkins of Indiana and William Harkins of Long Island, N.Y.; and 15 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, James J. Harkins and Mary Louise Hoerter Harkins; and a brother, Charles Harkins. Memorials may be directed to the Breast Cancer Support Group of LMH, 100 Airport Road, Kinston, NC 28501. Local arrangements are being handled by Taylor-Tyson Funeral Service of Snow Hill.
