KINSTON - Winston Armistead Ferguson, died on Tuesday, December 18, 2012, at Magnolia Glen in Raleigh, N.C. Winston was born on November 21, 1925, in Greeneville, Tennessee to Kathryn Brumley Armistead and William Harrison Armistead. She was reared in Kinston where her father had a long career as a tobacconist. She graduated from Grainger High School and attended St. Mary's College. Winston married Robert Hayes Ferguson Jr. in September, 1945 immediately upon his return from the Pacific Theatre. Bob's return to college led them to Lincoln, Nebraska and then to New Haven, Connecticut. In 1953, along with her children Rob and Bill, Winston and Bob left for an 18-month adventure in Rabat, French Morocco where she gave birth to her son, John in an ambulance en route to the military hospital at Port Lyautey. The family returned to Kinston where her daughter, Laura and son, Jim were born. Winston later lived many years in Winston-Salem and Raleigh, but always considered Kinston her home. Everyone who knew her commented on what a stylish, lovely and friendly person she was. She loved reading, working crossword puzzles, going to the beach and following national political events. The Presbyterian Church was very important to her. She is survived by her sister, Katherine Armistead Latimer and her husband John McChesney Latimer, of Chapel Hill, N.C.; her sons, Robert Hayes Ferguson III and his wife Nancy, of Rocky Mount, N.C., William Armistead Ferguson and his wife Judy, of Kinston, John Frazer Ferguson and his wife Paige, of Virginia Beach, Va., James Clarke Ferguson of Raleigh, N.C. and daughter, Laura Winston Myers of Raleigh, N.C. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Hayes Ferguson, Robert Ferguson, Alex Ferguson, William Ferguson, Katherine Ferguson, Winnie Ferguson, Carter Ferguson, William Myers and Charlotte Myers. She was preceded in death by her much-loved granddaughter, Sarah Winston Ferguson. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, December 21, 2012, at Kinston First Presbyterian Church with Wanda S. Neely, D. Min. Pastor officiating. Private interment will be held at Westview Cemetery in Kinston. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to First Presbyterian Church, 2101 North Heritage Street, Kinston, N.C. 28501. Arrangements are with Edwards Funeral Home.
