WINTERVILLE - Daniel Eugene Leigh, 84, died Monday, March 11, 2013, at Vidant Medical Center. A graveside service will be conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Westview Cemetery in Kinston. Daniel Eugene Leigh was born in Coleman, Florida to parents Lena Wicker Leigh and Robert Edward Leigh. Mr. Leigh was the brother of the late Linda Leigh Flippin of Wilson and the late Robert Edward Leigh Jr. of Forest Hills, N.Y. He was married to the late Dorothy Massey Leigh. Gene graduated from Grainger High School in Kinston and attended Wake Forest University. He later served in the United States Army. A lifetime lover of baseball and all sports, Gene played baseball in high school, college, and later pitched for the St. Louis Brown's minor league clubs in Marshall, Texas and Aberdeen, South Dakota. Gene's tobacco career included work with E.V. Webb Co. of Kinston and Carolina Leaf Tobacco Co. of Greenville with redrying work in both U.S. and the foreign tobacco markets. He is survived by his niece, Leigh Flippin Krause and husband Kenny, of Raleigh; great-nieces, Eliza and Katherine Krause all of Raleigh; nephews Robert E. Leigh III and wife Mabel Liang, of Cambridge, Mass. And Thomas H. Leigh and wife Angela, of Minneapolis, Minn.; stepson Randy Kelly and wife Molly, of Kinston; fiancée Doris Nobles and her sons, Michael Nobles and Charles Nobles of Winterville; special grandchildren, Brooks, Lee and Tonya; brother in-law, Robert S. Flippin of Wilson; sister in-law, Joanne B. Leigh of Minneapolis, Minn.; and caregivers, Ada Whitehurst and Tammy Harris, both of Greenville. The family will receive friends following the service at the cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Friends of the Pitt County Animal Shelter, 2850 E.
