Joe Haynes Obituary

HAYNES, JOE R., JR. - age 88, of Knoxville, died May 20, 2009, at 2:15pm. Born in Lewisburg, TN, Joe arrived in East Tennessee in 1939 to attend Carson-Newman College, attaining a B.A. degree in 1943. Voluntarily enlisting in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, he became a B-17 pilot, thus fulfilling the first of two boyhood ambitions. In June, 1948, he received his Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from the University of Tennessee College of Law, and began his practice of law in the office of Knoxville Attorney, Cecil D. Meek, Sr., thus fulfilling the second of his boyhood ambitions. He retired from active practice in 1991. During his professional career he served as President of the Knoxville Bar Association, Member of the Board of Governors of the Tennessee Bar Association, and member of the American Bar Association. He was an elected "Fellow" of the Knoxville Bar Foundation and President of the Phi Delta Phi International Legal Fraternity. In 2004, he received the "Knoxville Bar Governor's Award" for his exemplary legal career, his commendable personal life, his lasting integrity and community service. As a grateful and proud alumnus of Carson-Newman College, he served as President of the Alumni Association, as a long-time member and as Chairman of the Board of Trustees. As an active member of Central Baptist Church, Fountain City since 1946, he taught Sunday school classes, participated in a mission trip to Venezuela, served as Trustee, as Deacon, and served with his wife in both the "homebound" and "hospital" ministries of his church. He also served his denomination as a member of the Executive Board of the Tennessee Baptist Convention. Since 1969, he has served on the Executive Board of Directors for Medic Regional Blood Center. He and his wife shared a love for the mountains. Over a period of some 20 years, they hiked more than 8500 miles, mostly in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. To them, this enjoyable diversion was good for the body, mind and soul. Preceded in death by parents, Joe R. Haynes, Sr. and Margaret Drake Haynes; infant son, James Randall Haynes. Joe is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Reba Inklebarger Haynes; son, Joe R. Haynes, III (Jody) and wife Judy; daughter, Margaret Murdaugh and husband Mike; grandchildren, Ashley Duckett and husband Matt, David Blank and wife Tara, Clark Haynes and wife Rebecca, and Samantha Haynes; great-grandsons, Evan Joseph Duckett, Matthew Meadows, and Joseph Engwiller. Prior to his death, Joe wrote to his family, "When I die, may all my friends and loved ones withhold their tears, and instead, accept my guarantee that God has never withheld any good thing from me! Praise Him for all His blessings!" A praise service will be held Sunday, May 24, 5pm, in the sanctuary, Central Baptist Church, Ftn Cty, conducted by Rev. Ron Mouser and Dr. Calvin Metcalf. The family will receive friends from 3 until 5pm. Burial will be in Lynnhurst Cemetery, 1pm Monday. Serving as pallbearers will be Clark Haynes, Matt Duckett, Jerry Rysticken, Grady Renfro, Val Jackson, and Courtney Miller. Honorary pallbearers: David Blank, Mike Murdaugh, Bill Hunter, Lonas Tarr, and deacons of Central Baptist Church, and hikers. Dear Margaret and Family:
I am very saddened and gladdened by the passing of your Father. I know how much you loved him and am saddened to know how much you will miss him. I am also gladdened that he has passed over to be with our Eternal Father and will forevermore be at peace. I know this is a comfort, but it doesn't take away the loss as only time will. May you find comfort in seeking his spirit within your heart and the memories that you share.
With Sympathy,
Taylor
