BALL, DOUGLAS R. "DOUG" - age 59, of Knoxville, passed away on Friday, July 11, 2014 at Parkwest Hospital following a brief illness. Doug was raised in New Jersey. He was an avid sports fan, and followed the NY Yankees and NY Jets. Following high school graduation, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. Upon the completion of his tour of duty, he returned to New Jersey and ultimately began working for the United States Postal Service. Doug transferred to Tennessee, first in Church Hill and then to Knoxville. Doug served as a Union Rep and held various positions including letter carrier and mail handler, retiring in 2009. Doug met his wife Mary in 1995 and they wed in 2002. Doug became a loving father to Jennifer Withrow (Brian) through this marriage and was a doting grandfather to Davis and Grant Withrow. Doug was a parishioner at Sacred Heart parish where he helped with the grounds in past years. Doug also assisted his neighbors and served on the local Condominium Finance committee. Doug was a kind, considerate man who would do anything to help anyone. He will be greatly missed. He was preceded in death by his parents Robert D. and Mary F. Ball. He is survived by his wife, Mary A. Ball; daughter, Jennifer Withrow and husband Brian; grandchildren, Davis and Grant Withrow; in laws, Bruce and Kathern Burgin; sisters, Agnes Heitmueller and husband Richard, Mary Messina and husband Paul, and Nora Hardy; brothers-in-law, Larry Burgin and wife Kay, Jerry Burgin and wife Shannon, Jim Burgin and wife Ann; two aunts; an uncle; eight nephews, and five nieces. A funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday at 9:30 at Sacred Heart Cathedral with Father Joe Reed officiating. Family and friends will then travel in procession to East Tennessee State Veteran's Cemetery, 2200 E. Gov. John Sevier Hwy, Knoxville, TN 37920 for the interment with full military honors presented. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to the Sacred Heart Building Fund, 711 S. Northshore Dr., Knoxville, TN 37919, or East Tennessee Children's Hospital, 2018 W Clinch Ave, Knoxville, TN 37916. The family will receive friends on Tuesday night from 5:00 - 7:00 pm at Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel and that will be immediately followed by a brief Christian Prayer Service.
