HAROLD LEMAY MURPHREE

MURPHREE, HAROLD LEMAY - age 101, went to be with the Lord and his loved ones in heaven on Sunday, September 30, 2012. He was born on May 20, 1911 in Decatur, AL and rode a horse to school in his early years. He was a graduate of Decatur High School and was a small business owner for over 50 years in Chattanooga, TN where he met his wife of 62 years, Frances Vivian Long. He operated service stations downtown and on Signal Mountain and eventually founded Murphree Honey Company, a processor and wholesaler of honey under the "Dixieland" brand. He lived the last 30 years of his life in the West Knoxville/Farragut area to be near his son and much-loved grandchildren. He was known for his strong singing voice and was a longtime member of Chattanooga's Northside Presbyterian Church. Harold is survived by his son, Mike (Lori) Murphree of Farragut; a daughter, Kathleen (Terry) Nelson Watrson of Gainesville, FL; and a sister, Mary Nelle Moore of Ooltewah, TN. He also leaves behind five grandchildren, Dr. Richard (Angela) Nelson of Lithia, FL; Brent (Ilyana) Nelson of Gainesville, FL; Tessa (Mark) Morgan of Knoxville; Adam Murphree of New York City; and Annie Murphree of Birmingham, AL; six great-grandchildren, Austin Nelson, Brandon Nelson, Michael Nelson, Victoria Maynard, Thomas Maynard, and Mark Landon Morgan; and one great-great grandchild, Christian Nelson. Graveside services will be conducted at Hamilton Memorial Gardens in Hixson, TN. Highland Memorial Funeral Home in Knoxville, is in charge of arrangements. The Murphree family would like to thank the caring staff of Shannondale Retirement Home/Health Care Center-particularly Joe, Wilson, Janice, Sandra, and the dining room ladies-where "Papa" lived for over 11 years and was very popular and well-loved.
