NANCY LEE BODEN BYLIN

BYLIN, NANCY LEE BODEN - age 70, of Knoxville, passed away Sunday, March 9, 2014. Nancy was born July 8, 1943, in Knoxville, Iowa, to Dr. Worthy Boden and Lois Boden. She grew up in Sioux City, Iowa. She earned a BS degree from Morningside College and a master in library science from Emporia State College in Kansas. While at Morningside in 1963, Nancy had to skip a quarter for craniopharyogioma surgery (pituitary gland/localized tumor). September 5, 1970, Nancy married Carl Bylin, sergeant in US Air Force, stationed at Holliman AFB in New Mexico. In 1976 she attended Boy Scouts Wood Badge as one of the first women allowed. Nancy served as Committee cmember and Merit Badge counselor with Carl's Boy Scout troops. She was an assistant scoutmaster of a handicap troop in Lansing, Michigan, and another handicap troop in Arkansas. Nancy was always proud of being the first woman allowed in the Boy Scout movement which was very resistant to women. Since childhood Nancy loved many pets, with her first dog, Heidi, and later, Kie and Sandy. She is survived by her husband, Carl Bylin: sisters, Carla Britton, Emily Whittemore; and brother, Charles Boden. The family will receive friends Thursday, March 13, 2014, at 5:00 p.m. with a celebration of life to follow at 6:30 p.m. at Ebenezer United Methodist Church, 1001 Ebenezer Road with Rev. Nancy Twigg officiating. Services in Sioux City, Iowa, will be held at 1:00 p.m. on March 18, 2014, at Myer Brothers Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Graceland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Memorial Fund of Ebenezer United Methodist Church or Morningside College.
