Carl Quillin Obituary

QUILLIN, CARL K. - 77, Kingsport, died on Wednesday, March 28, 2012 at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center. He graduated from Shoemaker High School in Gate City, VA, East Tennessee State University, Johnson City, TN with a B.S. Degree and LaSalle University, Chicago, IL with a decoding degree. He completed graduate work at The University of Tennessee and the University of Wisconsin. Carl also received numerous degrees from the U.S. Army and the U.S. Navy to include five different flight schools. He retired from Eastman Kodak, Kingsport, TN after 29 years and the U.S. Army as Lt. Col., Master Aviator (active guard and reserve, 39 years.) He served 15 years with the Cub and Boy Scouts as Den Master, Junior Assistant Scout Master, Scout Master and Council Member. He was also a past or current member of the Retired Military Officer Association, Elks, Moose, Eagles and Kiwanis, Retired Tennessee Guard Association, Aircraft Owner's and Pilots Association, Shenandoah Country Club, NRA and the American Legion. He was a current member of Crossroads United Methodist Church, served as Bible School instructor, chairman of the building committee, finance committee and administrative board. Publications include "How to Teach Economics in High School" and "Office Planning and Design in the U.S. Army." Some of Carl's hobbies included hunting, fishing, tennis, golf, pool, model airplanes. boats, and wine-making. His inventions include "Microfilm Data Retrieval" with Recordak Division of Eastman Kodak Company and "Energy Notification System," "Emergency Power Systems for the Notification System" and "Q-3s Annunicator Models" for the Chemical Division of Eastman Kodak Company. The 23S models were used worldwide by Eastman Kodak Company. Carl was preceded in death by his father, A. Rush Quillin; mother, Edna F. (DeSpain) Quillin of Gate City, VA; son, Anthony Rush Quillin; and daughter, Terry Lynn Quillin. He is survived by wife, Sally Ann (Barron) Quillin; two sons, Randall Scott Quillin and Michael Ward Quillin and wife, Robin both of Kingsport; sister, Linda Lee Quillin Davis and husband, Bill of Knoxville, TN and six grandchildren. The family will receive friends on Saturday, March 31st from 11:00 - 1:00 p.m. at Hamlett-Dobson, Kingsport. Funeral services will follow at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Randy Lantz officiating.
