I only judge folks by the children that they put out there on the Earth because that is my "100 year test" of truth in the world.
Bud passes and Charley passes by being one of those people you could always count on.
Thanks be to God for the life and service and legacy of one of the "Good Guys".

Knox County and Halls have lost a fine man this year and one that will long be remembered for his exploits - as well as even the smallest kindnesses he has shown throughout his entire life. He apparently realized his talents were God-given and God-inspired, but his faith (choosing to believe in God and himself), his willingness to train hard, his determination, and perseverance helped bring him to the top. I was a younger first cousin (on his mother's side), so really mostly saw him from a distance until later in life, but was inspired by him none-the-less. To me he was like a gentle giant (in heart & stature) with the most wonderful smile. You knew when he had entered the building. I appreciated his warmth, encouragement, and kind words - especially as he spoke at my dad's (James') graveside service two years ago (which was just a few days after we buried my mom).
To his sisters, children, grandchildren, and other family and close friends, I extend my deepest sympathy; and pray that you will receive comfort in your minds, bodies, and spirits from the Lord (the God of all comfort), from each other, from friends, and from your own precious memories of a life well-lived. Blessings of peace and love to each of you!

Bud called me on the phone last fall; he had taken the time to track me down in Atlanta, where I have lived since 1966. Bud wanted to tell me that I had inspired him to become a hurdler (his father had been a champion high jumper). I was four years ahead of Bud in school and I went to Fulton, but it was my state record in the low hurdles that he broke when he was a senior at East.
I had never met Bud but I saw him set the record in 1958 and I told him when he called that I was flattered but that he turned out to be a much better hurdler than I was. We had a long conversation about high school and hurdling and traded a lot of good feelings and memories and compliments.
What impressed me when I talked to Bud was that he understood (as I had learned) that athletic talent is a gift from God, like all of life is, and although Bud never mentioned it in our phone call, when I read the entries in this Guest Book, I realize that Bud spent a lot of his life giving back to others.
I am proud to have had a small part in Bud's life, and I am forever grateful that he took the time to give back to me too. I celebrate his life and look forward to renewing our conversations and sharing more memories in Heaven.
I wish I could provide some comfort to those he left behind, and maybe I can, a little, just by saying "he was a great guy".

My sophomore year in high school I broke my back in a warehouse accident. When I was able to get back on my feet the best therapy mentally and physically I received was, Bud taking me out to the Halls High track and walking with me. Heaven has received a true gift. He was one of the greatest men I ever knew, and it was an honor to have been his friend.

Bud will be deeply missed. Bud and Joyce traded in my parents' pharmacy when I was a kid, but I remember him most for the countless hours he spent working with and encouraging me and so many other young athletes who wanted to improve their skills in track and field. Bud cared about our community and its youth, and the world needs more people like him.

Everyone knew (or had heard of) Bud in those early growing up days in Park City. As I read the expressions of sympathy or recollections from so many we know and remember then right on up to Bud's current family and friends, I am compelled to say that Bud is an example of one whose values remained intact. For anyone's life he touched (ours during my husband's 2009 major surgery), the fond memories are forever. God speed the pain of his loss.
