Today was a very pleasant day. Joyce being able to help you and your family brings such great joy to all those involved. Being around you and your beautiful home brings such peace, warmth and joy to ones heart. Hope you know that you are as great of joy as well as your family as knowing coach was. It just makes a person smile, knowing how much love there is in your hearts. We all love all of you and can't wait to see you soon. Our prayers and thoughts are always with you.

Joyce, I was so sorry to hear about Melvin. We were good friends from elementary school thru high school. He always saved me a seat on the bus. I was from the Reno area also. I learned to enjoy track and field events because of him. The Reno community and Cairo HS was real proud of him.
I just wanted to let you know that I was thinking of you and your family.

Joyce,Allison,Mark and to all the wonderful grandkids whom which coach loved with every part of his being. I am so thankful everyday for getting to know coach more closely before he left this world full of people whom loved him sooooo much and more than anything had the utmost RESPECT for him.I miss him dearly and wished I could have had more time to learn from him but I will never forget what he did teach me and always think about what he could have tought me. He was such an inspiration and made me always want to strive to be better. I just hope one day that at 65 I can be half the worker that he always was. GOD could not have created a more special person. Thank you Lord for a most wondeful creation. All my Love, thoughts, and prayers.

I will always remember Uncle Melvin and the fishing trips to Grandma and Grandaddy's pond in Reno, Ga. He was always telling jokes that made me laugh so hard that I almost fell out of the boat! Out of all of the special times with Uncle Melvin, nothing made me feel more on top of the world than when he said "I love ya shug." I love you Uncle Melvin and know that I will see you again someday. Until then, rest in peace.
Love you Aunt Joyce,

What a blessing it was to have Coach Maxwell as a neighbor, mentor, and teacher. I can still hear his voice telling the stories about growing up in Georgia, working on the farm. He was always there for any one who needed help and always fought for the underdog. I'm sure there is no way to count the lives that he impacted in a truly positive way. My prayers and thoughts are with his family. May your memories and the knowledge that he was leaves a wonderful legacy bring you comfort.

Coach Maxwell was an inspiration to me in the most formative years of my life. His dedication to be "competitive" and acheive your very best has influenced my life on a daily basis. May these memories sustain your family in the days to come. May Coach's happiness live on in you.

My mother being the eldest sibling of the Maxwell children,I have had the privilege of very early memories of Melvin. I watched as he strived and met the goals he set. Reaching these goals only encouraged him to set higher ones. Seeing him off to U.T., I was the happy niece of ten years old. I had all my friends convinced he was a "True Star"! (Ha)! Many fond memories of visiting him and watching him compete.
My great respect for him: he was proud of his heritage. He loved his parents with an unconditional love, as well as all of us. He was happy to visit the farm and be "just a country boy".
Meeting a beautiful U.T. Nurse - we knew his heart would remain in TN. His family was his heart. Marc and Allison's names brought a twinkle in his eyes, and the grandchildren completed his joy.
The last few days have been very tearful. I could call him from Florida totally concerned about my elderly mother's health (his sister) and we always ended each call feeling better and always with an I Love You.
His devotion to Mom was so real. Every night at 9:00 P.M., seven days a week he called her. Often to encourage her or just to chat about memories of long ago.
This last year, him and I have had time to spend together due to Mom's illness. We've had tears, but oh so many laughs. He was truly the funniest guy. He loved life and wanted to make everyone's life just a little happier.
Yes, my heart is broken, but it is a Joy to know he is safe in the arms of our Lord.
Thanks, Melvin for teaching us all to love life!
Love, your niece,
Dale C. Edwards

I graduated in 96 and am honored to have been in his health class. There are so many stories to tell and just the way he incorporated his humor and passion of teaching made health class so enjoyable. One saying that coach would always say is "Amen Brother Ben, shot at a rooster, hit a hen. Hen died, rooster cried, all the babies commited suicide." That saying was so funny to me, that I sat down one day and said it over and over until I remembered it. He will truly be missed, and had a huge impact on so many people! May God bless.

Aunt Joyce and Family,
Uncle Melvin was such a wonderful guy. He and my dad were very close. I remember many happy times when he would come home to the old homeplace, where I also had the privilege to grow up. I can still see my dad cooking for us and Uncle Melvin telling jokes as he always did. He was always so very kind and thoughtful. I remember very well him encouraging me to set my goals high and work hard. Besides my own father, I never have known a man that worked as hard as he did. It is truly an honor to have had somone like him in my family that touched the lives of so many people. My only hope is that I will leave the legacy that he has and will have the opportunity to touch lives like he did. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. Far away but not forgotten. Dear Coach,
The memories that comes to mind are too numerous...the years that I ran track with you, the many trips to eat lunch when I was a student then the years we ate lunch together as teachers. Melody also has wonderful memories as a student and as our friend. We laugh when we think of us all eating lunch in the cafeteria over on the Young Campus. You all are such great neighbors and friends. We were so shocked when we heard the news. It will be hard to drive across that creek but then we will remember how much you loved to fish. When we look at your beautiful backyard, we will remember how you loved to mow and make it look just perfect. Neighbor, we love you and will miss you dearly.

I graduated from Doyle in 1976 and ran track in the Spring of my Junior and Senior year. Coach always had a way of getting the most out of you and still encouraging you at the same time. I don't run anymore but still try to stay in shape. I believe those early years of conditioning helped me make it a part of my life even today. Coach was just a good all around guy. I'm happy to hear about his church involvement and look forward to seeing him in Heaven some day.
