VON DER ESCH, RUTH - age 87 of Knoxville, TN passed away Sunday, November 11, 2012 peacefully at home surrounded by family and love. Ruth was born January 14, 1925 in Liberty, New York to Dora and Henry Eichenauer. The youngest of 10 children, she enjoyed the comfort and laughter that a large family gives and continued to create "families of friends" wherever she lived, and for over the last 20 years, her family of the Dotys and Fox Den County Club. Ruth married her high school sweetheart, Al von der Esch in 1946. He preceded her in death in 1994. Throughout their life together, they enjoyed the many places where they lived, but made their final home in Knoxville. Ruth and Al saw the world together. Ruth was a phenomenal athlete. In her 30's she discovered golf and a true love affair began that has lasted throughout her life. She played in and won many tournaments. Ruth was a champion on and off the course. She played the game with grace. Most recently in October, Ruth played the Member Member at Fox Den, tieing for first place. As she had with many other rounds, she teamed up with Kaye Doty. Kaye and Ruth had wonderful times, trips and laughter together. Kaye's family became Ruth's as well. Cal and Jolynn, Charlee and Savanna Doty, Mark and Laura, Matt and Maggie Doty, Steve and Tonja, Cameron and Nick Doty, as well as Laura and Joe Deters, Alice, Thomas and Anna, always welcomed her to their homes for so many occasions. Her daughters, Vicki Hunt of Gold Canyon, AZ and Leigh von der Esch of Salt Lake City, UT and beloved grandson, Ryan Woodard, and two great-grandsons, Hunter and Reece Woodard of Gillette, WY, survive Ruth. Ruth loved sharing nature and the beauty of the great outdoors with her family. She is also survived by brothers, Charles Eichenauer of Liberty, NY, and Richard Eichenauer of Washington Township, NJ; as well as sister, Jacqueline Harris of Richmond, VA. The family wishes to thank the Doty family, Julie and Tom Natale, Jamie and Dr. Ed Knowling, Judy and Bud Weiser, Mae and Bob Barlow, Joyce and Frank DiRenzo, Jane and Charles Allen Gouffon and Carrol Blake. Words cannot express the love and support of these friends to Ruth over the years and in recent days. The family also wishes to thank her "birthday girls" and her Fox Den "family" of friends, neighbors and fellow golfers for their companionship, love and support. The family wishes to thank Dr. James T. Kirby and Dr. Marvin Vickers and the staff of Parkwest Hospital for their compassionate care of Ruth. Ruth loved life and laughter. Although the course is closed here on earth for Ruth, we have no doubt that Al and family and friends, have picked the perfect tee to resume playing. It's tee time in heaven for Ruth. A Celebration of Life for Ruth will be held at Fox Den County Club from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm on Thursday, November 15, 2012. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a
