POLOFSKY, GORDON - age 82, passed away peacefully in his home on Monday, October 07, 2013. He was born in Providence, Rhode Island to the late Joseph and Anna Polofsky on January 10, 1931. Gordon came to Knoxville in 1948 to attend the University of Tennessee, and was a member of the Tennessee Volunteers football program, where he was a three year letterman, and an All-SEC linebacker on the 1951 National Championship team. After graduation, he played three years in the National Football League for the Chicago Cardinals, and then served as an officer in the United States Army, before returning to Knoxville where he had a successful 40 year business career. After retirement, he enjoyed golf, vegetable gardening, and entertaining friends and family. Gordon also played a key role in the development of the UT Athletic Letterman's Wall of Fame, which was built in 2000. He was preceded in death by siblings Harry Polofsky, Alice Harris, and Michael Polofsky. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Charlotte; son and daughter-in-law Jeff and Lori Polofsky of North Myrtle Beach, SC; son, Joe Polofsky of Atlanta, GA; grandsons, Alex and Grant Polofsky of North Myrtle Beach, SC; and sisters Baila Bender and Sheila Polofsky of Rhode Island. The family will receive friends from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm on Thursday, October 10, 2013 at Rose Mortuary, Mann's Heritage Chapel, with a celebration of life service to follow, Rabbi Alon Ferency officiating. Interment will follow at the Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery. The family requests that memorials be made to CARIS Hospice Healthcare of Knoxville, in lieu of flowers.
