NEWCOMB, WILLIAM (BILL) - age 83 , of Knoxville, began his Heavenly life on Sunday, December 15, 2013 to join family and friends gone on before. He was a longtime faithful member and deacon of Oakwood Baptist Church. He was retired from the City of Knoxville Garage and a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in the Korean War. Bill will be remembered as being the most unselfish, loving, gentle and caring daddy, papaw and devoted husband. Preceded in death by sons, Ronnie and David Newcomb; parents, Elisha and Cordia Newcomb; along with many brothers and sister. Survivors: wife of 57 years, Josephine (Joe) Newcomb; daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and David Vanzant; daughter, Faye Newcomb; grandchildren, Amanda Hill and husband Houston, Katie Nelson and husband Kris, Corey Newcomb, Sarah Maples, Mallory Newcomb, Shellie Underwood, Kameka Vanzant, Nikki Price; great-grandchildren, Elijah Smith, Addison Nelson, Myya Scarbrough and Jayden Vanzant; several nieces and nephews. Family will receive friends Tuesday, December 17, 2013 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Oakwood Baptist Church with funeral service to follow at 7:00 p.m. Dr. Charles Jenkins and Rev. Tony Earl officiating. Memorials may be made to Oakwood Baptist Church, 111 East Columbia Avenue, Knoxville, TN 37917. Family and friends will meet 10:15 a.m. Wednesday at Stevens Mortuary to go in procession to Highland Memorial Park for an 11:00 a.m. graveside service and interment. Pallbearers will be deacons of Oakwood Baptist Church. Honorary pallbearers will be the retired deacons of Oakwood Baptist Church.
